The 15th Century marks the beginning of a new era, one in which the Ottoman Empire amplifies its influence into the Albanian territories, until it manages to occupy most of them for a time span of five centuries. An important collection of architectural testimony, consisting mainly of buildings pertaining to the Muslim cult and fortifications, originates from the fifteenth until the seventeenth century. Through a historical, urban, architectonic, and socio-cultural study, this article will bring attention to Modern Fortifications in the Albanian coastline of the Mediterranean. The article will provide a detailed analysis of the castle of Durrës, stretched along the Egnatia road and the upper part of Adriatic Sea, the most important castle the imprints of which are partially preserved nowadays.

The study is based in the center of Tirana, near the main boulevard of the city. The poster presents some selected projects that provide interesting solutions to the use of public space. The area is located between the Prime Ministry, the Institute of Statistics, the International Center of Culture (The Pyramid) and Ismail Qemali Street. The project is generated by a new building, which connects physically the first two, and creates a series of urban gardens and squares for this area of the city. This study focuses on the public space, responding to the urban needs of Tirana. The new created spaces are designed as a framework of a square connecting system, generating special functions through contemporary urban interior models.
