The successful implementation of any educational reform is hinged upon teachers’ well informed in... more The successful implementation of any educational reform is hinged upon teachers’ well informed interest and endorsement of the reform. This study centred on teachers’ awareness and acceptance of the trade and entrepreneurship curriculum newly introduced into the Nigeria education system. Specifically, the study ascertained the levels of awareness and acceptance of the new trade and entrepreneurship curriculum among senior secondary school teachers in North East Nigeria. Using a survey design, data were collected from 123 teachers who responded to the Teachers’ Trades Awareness and Acceptance Questionnaire (TTAAQ). They were requested to express on 3-point loading (‘Certainly No’, ‘Not sure’ & ‘Definitely Yes’) their awareness and acceptance level. Findings revealed that the respondents were ‘not sure’ about their awareness as well as their acceptance of the new Trades curriculum. Their awareness and acceptance levels were poor or uncertain. It was found that there were no significant differences between public and private school teachers in their awareness as well as acceptance of the new curriculum. It was therefore suggested that the relevant authorities should intensify sensitization and advocacy on the new trade and entrepreneurship curriculum as well as increase teachers’ involvement in the entire curriculum development and implementation process.

To promote Science and Technology at the classroom level, for national growth and global competit... more To promote Science and Technology at the classroom level, for national growth and global competitiveness, nations are now paying more attention to students’ active participation in science learning. This study investigated science students’ task engagement in relation to their learning outcomes (attitude and achievement) in Chemistry. A stratified sample of 60 students drawn from 10 schools was used in the study. The Student Task Engagement Record, a classroom observation instrument, was used to record students’ on-task and off-task behaviour/engagement during chemistry lessons. At the end of the 6 weeks observation period, the Chemistry Achievement Test and Chemistry Attitude Questionnaire were administered to ascertain students’ chemistry achievement and attitude respectively. The engagement scores of the students were correlated with their achievement and attitude scores using Pearson’s product moment correlation. Students’ task engagement was found to have significant, positive correlation (r = 0.74) with achievement in chemistry; and non-significant negative correlation (r = -0.03) with attitude toward chemistry. It was therefore recommended that strategies for promoting task engagement should be taught and promoted in schools. Both practicing and trainee science teachers should build capacity in fostering engaging learning activities.

The study centered on students’ employability skills which include skills and potentials for obtaining and succeeding in a job. It assessed senior secondary school chemistry students’ employability skills as well as science teachers’ sense of efficacy in helping students acquire the skills. Also, the study ascertained science teachers’ perceptions regarding the extent to which science students are exposed to employability enhancing activities. Using survey design, data were collected from 200-student and 40-teacher respondents. The study used three (3) questionnaires, namely: Student Employability Skills Questionnaire (SESQ), Employability Opportunity Questionnaire (EOQ) and Employability Efficacy Questionnaire (EEQ). Findings showed that the science students’ employability skills scores were > 2.0 criteria, thus they were considered competent. While numeracy, independent study skills and team work were highly ranked students’ skills, other skills like problem-solving, ICT skills and time management were ranked low. The study also found that different employability skills development opportunities abound in the schools in varying degrees. Also, a generally high sense of efficacy was found among science teachers, though they expressed sense of weakness in fostering students’ ICT and numerical skills. It was suggested that school authorities should create enabling environment where the development of employability skills will thrive; and that science teachers should provide enrichment activities especially to develop students’ competency in problem-solving and ICT."

The paper studied teachers' perception of the trade/entrepreneurship subjects that form a central... more The paper studied teachers' perception of the trade/entrepreneurship subjects that form a central part of the new senior secondary school curriculum in Nigeria. It used a 35/7 matrix questionnaire to identify and rank teachers' perception of the 35 trades/entrepreneurship subjects. A total of 53 teachers drawn from the four distinct fields of study (Science & mathematics, Technology, Humanities, and Business Studies) participated in the study. Simple statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for data analysis. Result showed different ratings of the trade subjects and two prominent determinants of choice of trade subjects. The study recommended some considerations for staging trade subjects in school.

This paper, therefore, discussed the Nigerian education system and the millennium development goals. It also highlighted the structure, content and basic features of the New Secondary Education Curriculum, and the prospects and challenges of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Strategies for effective implementation of the new senior secondary education curriculum were suggested.

Educational research, like any other field of study, ideally should inform workplace practices -that is, classroom teaching and learning. Over the years various studies have been carried out for the purpose of bringing needed innovations into teaching and learning for functional education. However, there are clear indications that the findings of educational researches are not meeting this primary objective. Research findings have not been translated into effective practices in the classroom and policy formulation. This paper therefore focuses on providing direction for educational research; utilizing the combined effect of theory, research and practice for school improvement. The paper adopts a theoretical pathway towards fashioning out an approach that will make the findings of educational research teacher friendly and thus bridge the long existing gap between research, theory and practice in education. A conceptual analysis was taken and following the analysis, the paper provided a theoretical framework ‘usability approach’ that is aimed at enhancing research usability in daily classroom activities, policy formulation and implementation.

The study investigated the influences of Adults' socio-psychological characteristics on their active participation in adult educational programme. Stratified random samples of 100 adult learners drawn from 10 different Adult Education Centers in Aba, Abia State, were used for the study. Four questionnaires types were used to measure variables of socio-psychological characteristics and participation. Cronbach’s alpha was found to be 0.85 for type1 questionnaire, 0.80 for type2, 0.79 for type 3 and 0.65 for type 4. All the instruments were validated by expert in adult education and were administered at same period of time (November, 2000). It was established that a person's character has much to do with the varying levels of social participation in every day's activities - even in adult learning programmes.

In science teaching and learning, considering the nature and content of science as well as the classroom environment, the teacher is seen as playing the crucial role of harnessing all resources and evoking student activity for classroom success. This study investigated students’ attitude and achievement in science (chemistry) as a correlate of teacher classroom management behaviours (TCMB). A random sample of SSII chemistry students (60) and teachers (10) from Secondary Schools (10) were selected in Ibadan North L.G.A of Oyo State. Data were collected using direct-observation instruments and questionnaires. Pearson moment coefficient was used to test the null hypothesis for significance at 0.05 error margin. Some categories of the TCMB were found to be strongly, positively and significantly related to students’ attitude and achievement in chemistry. The implications for policy formulation, teacher training and teaching-learning in science education were discussed."
