Anna Kollatz
I am a researcher on history, society and literature of the Islamic world with special interest in the Mamluk Sultanate (1250-1517) and the Mediterranean region in general, as well as in the Indian subcontinent up to the transition into the 19th century.
I am fascinated by ethnically and religiously diverse societies, the functions of historiographical writing and forms of social dependency up to the early modern period. More recently, I have been working on satire and cartoon magazines in 20th century Egypt.
My first book dealt with the Majalis-i Jahangiri, an 'emperor's hagiography' in the form of conversation notes from the Mughal court. My second book project will be the first monographic study on Ibn Iyas al-Hanafi. It focuses on the ways of worldmaking and working processes of this Mamluk period historiographer.

Mamluk period. This book is the first to take stock of the author’s complete works, approaching him through an examination of
his narrative voice and writing strategies. Tracing Ibn Iyās’s working process by compilation analysis, it shows how the author
adapted his representations of Egyptian history to his writing projects and audience. Ibn Iyās’s ways of worldmaking are shaped
deeply by beliefs, biases and intellectual trends as well as the impact of the social and historical context the author wrote in.
Knowing these conditioning factors allows to understand his presentation of history as an individual voice of his time.
Jahrhundert.

We aim at bringing together case studies from different perspectives on awlād and their impact on society. Contributions may focus on individual awlād an-nās or their social contexts, as well as on the ways awlād an-nās, their status and social impact are being reflected in different source material. We welcome contributions that explore the status of awlād an-nās and their impact on Mamluk society addressing one (or several) of the following questions.
- In which fields could awlād develop agency and exert influence?
- In which social networks were they integrated, and what functions did they fulfil in them?
- Was there any understanding of a social group of the Mamluk descendants at all, and if so, what did it look like?
- In which contexts and in which fashion was the position of the awlād addressed?
- How did awlād themselves define and characterize their status?
The conference will be held in Bonn on December 17-18, 2020. The proceedings of the conference will be published in the Mamluk Studies series.
Reactions may be sent to akollatz@uni-bonn.de until March 15, 2020. Abstracts (roughly 200 words) should describe the proposed paper, including topic, method, and used sources).
