Brian D Strahl
Brian Strahl obtained his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in 1998, where he studied the transcriptional regulation of the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)-beta gene. His interest in gene regulation led him to pursue his postdoctoral studies in the laboratory of Dr. David Allis at the University of Virginia, where he made a number of crucial insights and discoveries in the area of histone methylation. In 2001, Brian Strahl began his independent career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), where he is now a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics. Dr. Strahl is also the Vice Chair in his home department and is the faculty director of the peptide synthesis and arraying core facility at UNC.
Over the course of his career in academia, Brian Strahl has made a significant number of accomplishments in the histone, chromatin, and transcription fields, with over 80 publications in top-tier journals. These discoveries have gained him wide recognition. In 2009, UNC honored him with the Ruth and Phillip Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement. The previous year, Dr. Brian Strahl received the Exceptional, Unconventional Research Enabling Knowledge Acceleration Award (EUREKA) from the National Institute of Health. In 2006, he was presented with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Young Alumni Award. One year earlier, he received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from North Carolina State University. In the same year, Dr. Strahl was given the ASBMB Schering-Plough Research Institute Award, an important honor that is only given once a year. Dr. Strahl was named a Pew Scholar in 2004. In 2003, he was honored at the White House, where he received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Recently, Brian Strahl was named an Oliver Smithies Investigator at UNC.
Before starting his scientific career, Dr. Strahl attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Biology in 1993. It was during his undergraduate studies that Dr. Strahl obtained his excitement for scientific research. In addition to making new discoveries in his UNC laboratory, Dr. Strahl greatly enjoys teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students on how to be independent scientists.
