ABSTRACT The AVC video coding standard adopts variable block sizes for inter frame coding to incr... more ABSTRACT The AVC video coding standard adopts variable block sizes for inter frame coding to increase compression efficiency, among other new features. As a consequence of this, an AVC encoder has to employ a complex mode decision technique that requires high computational complexity. Several techniques aimed at accelerating the inter prediction process have been proposed in the literature in recent years. Recently, with the emergence of many-core processors or accelerators, a new way of supporting inter frame prediction has presented itself. In this paper, we present a step forward in the implementation of an AVC inter prediction algorithm in a graphics processing unit, using Compute Unified Device Architecture. The results show a negligible drop in rate distortion with a time reduction, on average, of over 98.8 % compared with full search and fast full search, and of over 80 % compared with UMHexagonS search.

Recently, the progress of GPUs has attracted considerable attention because they are able to offer practical and acceptable solutions for speeding up graphic and non-graphic applications. In this paper, we present an implementation of H.264/AVC Motion Estimation running on an NVIDIA GTX285 using CUDA. The algorithm is divided into three steps, all of which need to be executed sequentially but each one is exploited following a highly parallel procedure by using the GPU. The execution time of the proposed motion estimation algorithm is 53 times faster and it reduces the energy consumption by a factor of 9 compared with the JM reference encoder using a single CPU core.

Data quality has syntactic and semantic component; the syntactic component is relatively easy to achieve if supported by tools (either off-the-shelf or our own), while semantic component requires more research. In many cases such data come from different sources, are distributed across enterprise and are at different quality levels. Special attention needs to be paid to data upon which critical decisions are met, such as medical data for example. The starting point for research is in our case the risk of the medical area. In the paper we will focus on the semantic component of medical data quality.
