Optical transitions were analysed in terms of the imaginary part of dielectric constant giving rise to direct allowed transition of 2.81 eV, indirect allowed transition of 2.15 eV together with assisting phonon of 0.058 eV. The electronic transitions are also estimated from the variation of refractive index and extinction coefficient with photon energy.

Scrap rubber tyres are one of the synthetic fibre materials that can be used as a soil stabilizer... more Scrap rubber tyres are one of the synthetic fibre materials that can be used as a soil stabilizer. This study looks into the effects of scrap rubber tyres as a soil stabiliser on clay soil. Soil samples were collected in Kota Kinabalu, and the scrap rubber tyre was passed through a 2 mm passing sieve. Three experimental tests were carried out: compaction, consolidation, and an unconfined compression test (UCT). During the compaction test, the maximum dry density (MDD) and optimum moisture content (OMC) parameters were determined using the proctor standard penetration test. The shear strength of all soil samples was determined using UCT. The consolidation test also looks at the compressibility index and swelling index. Four soil sample configurations were prepared, one as a control sample and three with different soils mixed with varying percentages of scrap rubber tires: 1.5%, 2%, and 5%. This study investigates the degree of compaction, shear strength, settlement behaviour (compressibility), and swelling behaviour of scrap rubber tyres as a soil stabiliser. According to the findings, the optimal amount of scrap rubber tyres as a stabiliser that could improve the properties of clayey soil is 2%.

Various agricultural wastes have been used for the extraction of NCC. Coconut wastes have been widely studied as potential adsorbents for the removal of pollutants, including dyes and heavy metals. METHODS: In this work, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was successfully isolated from coconut husk fibers through alkaline pretreatment accompanied by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Then, the ability of NCC to adsorb Cu2+ from aqueous solution in batch studies was investigated. RESULTS: Results indicated that the optimal hydrolysis parameters were achieved at 50° C for 45 min with 64% sulfuric acid to extract NCC as rod-like particles with diameters between 4-10 nm. The potential of NCC as a biosorbent to remove copper ions (Cu2+) from aqueous solution was investigated in terms of batch mode and maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 79.491 mg/g of Cu2+. In general, the preparation methods for starch nanoparticles (SNPs) can be classified into ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ methods. SNPs can be produced in smaller sizes and used to improve the functional properties of starch. Thus, they are considered for the various opportunities to improve the quality of product development with starch. This literature study presents information and reviews regarding SNPs, their general preparation methods, characteristics of the resulting SNPs and their applications, especially in food systems, such as Pickering emulsion, bioplastic filler, antimicrobial agent, fat replacer and encapsulating agent. The aspects related to the properties of SNPs and information on the extent of their utilisation are reviewed in this study. The findings can be utilised and encouraged by other researchers to develop and expand the applications of SNPs.
