Isophote shapes of elliptical galaxies. I. The data.
Abstract
CCD surface-photometry was carried out for 69 bright elliptical galaxies in the Cousins V, R, I system. This sample contains nearly all elliptical galaxies brighter than B_T_ = 12.4 mag and north of δ = -10^deg^ (47 objects), as well as 22 additional objects selected mostly because of X-ray or radio emission. The data were used to obtain the radial dependence of the surface brightness, ellipticity and major-axis position-angle for each galaxy. The deviations of the isophotes from pure ellipses were analysed for systematic components by means of Fourier transforms. 80% of the galaxies show systematic deviations larger than 0.2% in units of the semimajor axis length. Generally the deviations appear in the form of box-shaped or disk-shaped components. The collected data form the basis for a detailed statistical analysis to be described in a forthcoming paper.
