This impasse is referred to, here, as the “Victorian Predicament,” the clash between two conflicting aspects of Victorianism. On the one hand, there is the rigid code of morality, represented by the Evangelical Movement, proposing an ideal of respectability suitable for the new emerging middle classes. On the other hand, we have the influence of the Romantic Movement, which poses a new ethics and a new aesthetics. The idea suggested is that the use of symbolic imagery solves this difficulty of coping with the simultaneous commitments to morality and passion, and forges the style characterized by the use of poetic prose that is the mark of Bronte’s writing.

Entretanto, não possui refinamento, parece muito autocentrada, sem polimento, totalmente ignorante quanto aos costumes

The center of the investigation is the work of Charlotte Brontë, with special emphasis on the novel Jane Eyre. The thesis proposed is that the use of symbolic imagery solves the difficulty of coping with the simultaneous commitment to morality and passion that characterizes the Victorian times. This is an argumentative dissertation, divided into six chapters. Chapter one presents the procedures to be followed and introduces some information about Victorianism. Chapter two displays the review of bibliography and examines the workings of Victorian criticism. The three following chapters deal respectively with Romanticism, Religion and Imagination. In the conclusion we hope to validate the thesis proposed and, to some extent, reevaluate our current notions about Victorianism.

Forster’s ideas about Personal Relation as met in his six novels, A Room with a View, Where Angels Fear to Tread, The Longest Journey, Howards End, Maurice and A Passage to India. In each of the novels we can note the influence of two opposite trends: Skepticism, suggesting doubt, and Humanism, indicating an implicit faith in human nature. The clash between these opposite doctrines is reflected in Forster’s themes, making of him an ambiguous author, and raising some paradoxes and controversies. On the one hand, this ambiguity originates flaws and inconsistencies. On the other, it widens the scope of the novels and invokes interesting dichotomies such as Order versus Chaos, or Death versus Eternity. Our purpose is to provide an analysis of each novel, taking into consideration the influence of these flaws and ambiguities upon the theme of Personal Relations.
