We hypothesized that fish beta diversity would increase towards lower latitudes and be higher in less disturbed lakes at within-region scale, but environmental disturbances could affect these patterns due to community homogenization or heterogenization (e.g., gain of exotic species) among lakes. We used generalized dissimilarity modeling to assess the relative importance of geographic distance, climate, and environmental heterogeneity on fish beta diversity across Denmark, Belgium/The Netherlands, and Spain. Greenland lakes are suitable model systems for evaluating fish population structure because of th... more Greenland lakes are suitable model systems for evaluating fish population structure because of their relatively low species diversity and simple food web structure. Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) mostly occur in these low-density systems, co-occurring with three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus). We aim at exploring the size and age structure of populations of Arctic charr across 17 West Greenland lakes, by also accounting for the effect of anadromy (i.e. migration of fish, from salt water to freshwater) and the presence of dwarf individuals of charr. The lakes hosted either a solitary population of Arctic charr or co-occurring charr and three-spined sticklebacks. Hence, these arctic systems provided a unique opportunity to study the influence of sticklebacks on the fish condition and habitat distribution of charr populations. ZOOPLANKTON COMPOSITION IN EUTROPHIC RESERVOIRS OF THE SEMI-ARID REGION OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE ST... more ZOOPLANKTON COMPOSITION IN EUTROPHIC RESERVOIRS OF THE SEMI-ARID REGION OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE STATE (Northeast Brazil). Species composition and abundance of the zooplankton were studied in six eutrophic reservoirs of Rio Grande do Norte State, which showed high concentrations of total phosphorus, high phytoplankton biomass and dominance by cianobacteria. Sampling was carried out during dry, rainy and transitional periods. Zooplankton also showed quantitative patterns suggestive of eutrophic conditions, expressed by high densities. Moreover it was observed a spatial differentiation in the composition of zooplankton community. Rotifers (specially Keratella tropica, Brachionus havanensis e Keratella americana) were the dominant forms in the zooplanktonic community of Itans, Passagem das Traíras and Sabugi reservoirs, while Calanoid copepods (mainly Notodiaptomus cearensis) dominated in Armando Ribeiro, Gargalheiras and Parelhas reservoirs. The structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems have been drastically modified by global warmi... more The structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems have been drastically modified by global warming, with fish species potentially performing habitat shifts such as the northern expansion of generalist and warm-adapted species. The freshwater fish species Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus, hereafter charr) plays a key role in Arctic lake food webs, but sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) may impact the trophic position (TP) of charr by affecting their habitat choice and food resources. In the present study, we used multiple regression analyses to examine the role of lake morphology (i.e., depth and area) and influence of sticklebacks on the TP of charr (estimated from δ15N and δ13C) sampled in nine Arctic lakes in Western Greenland between 2011 and 2013. Results showed that charr populations exhibited larger TP values when co-occurring with sticklebacks. We quantified the phosphorus (P) fractions and oxide content in the sediment of eight tropical se... more We quantified the phosphorus (P) fractions and oxide content in the sediment of eight tropical semiarid reservoirs to assess how water-level decreases affect the potential P internal loading. Chemical fractionation analyses were carried out to determine the P fractions in the reservoirs’ sediment, and their chemical composition was evaluated via X-ray fluorescence. Linear regressions were performed to evaluate how changes in the oxide content in the reservoirs’ sediment and percentage of the maximum volume stored (%MVS) affected the P fractions. About 35 to 46% of the content of the sediment load of the total phosphorus (TP) was associated with potentially mobile P forms (NaOH-P and BD-P). The chemical composition of the sediments indicated a strong presence of Al2O3 and Fe2O3. The regressions showed that the lower the proportions of Al2O3 content, the lower was both P mobile (Total-P and BD-P) and non-mobile forms (HCl-P and Res-P) in the reservoirs sediment, whereas the proportions of Fe2O3 content were positively related to NaOH-P and Res-P. Moreover, the proportions of SiO2 and CaO content in the sediment were respectively negatively related to NaOH-P and positively related to HCl-P. The decrease in the %MVS in the reservoirs favored both the accumulation of non-mobile forms of P (HCl-P and Res-P) and CaO in the sediments, whereas an opposite pattern was observed for Al2O3. The high P load in the sediments, associated with potentially mobile forms and low water level, indicates that an internal loading mechanism may be present in the environments observed.

The relationships between fish composition, connectivity and morphometry of 103 lagoons in nine f... more The relationships between fish composition, connectivity and morphometry of 103 lagoons in nine freshwater ecoregions (FEOW) between 2·83° S and 37·64° S were evaluated in order to detect possible congruence between the gradient of species richness and similarities of assemblage composition. Most lagoons included in the study were <2 km(2) , with a maximum of 3975 km(2) in surface area. Combined surface area of all lagoons included in the study was 5411 km(2) . Number of species varied locally from one to 76. A multiple regression revealed that latitude, attributes of morphometry and connectivity, and sampling effort explained a large amount of variability in species richness. Lagoon area was a good predictor of species richness except in low latitude ecoregions, where lagoons are typically small-sized and not affected by marine immigrants, and where non-native fish species accounted for a significant portion of species richness. Species composition, density, and temporal dynamics of zooplankton were studied in six reservoirs... more Species composition, density, and temporal dynamics of zooplankton were studied in six reservoirs in a semi-arid region in tropical northeastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Norte state). All the reservoirs are highly eutrophic, with high contents of total nitrogen (minimum of 1200 µg.L-1) and total phosphorus (minimum of 10 µg.L-1), and extremely high algal biomass was registered (surpassing 20 µg Chl a.L-1). All the reservoirs showed an enduring condition of high turbidity and phytoplankton assemblages dominated by cyanobacteria. Zooplankton also showed quantitative patterns suggestive of eutrophic conditions, expressed by high densities, mainly in Passagem das Traíras and Sabugi reservoirs.
