Additional evidence for a study of this phenomenon, now available from the Orissa mss. of the Paippalāda recension of the Atharvaveda, points to the systematic character of the two opposite developments, ś > s and s > ś. I argue that there are good reasons to consider these changes regular phonetic processes attested in certain phonological contexts, rather than a random vacillation. This phenomenon must represent one of the most salient linguistic features of the dialect of the Atharvaveda.
