The aim of this study is to determine parental perceptions of the consent process involved in performing research in newborn care, to explore methods used to obtain consent and their acceptability to parents. A parental questionnaire was developed that examined attitudes towards research and hypothetical research studies, in which the acceptability of various methods of consent was examined (informed, waived, deferred). These research scenarios were of varying time sensitivity and perceived risk level. The study setting was an Irish maternity hospital. There were 600 responses to the questionnaire. In 93% of cases, parents felt that their involvement in the consent process was essential. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of an educational initiative to optimize correct placement of ETTs and UCs in very preterm infants. A pre-post study design, evaluating optimal radiological position of ETTs and UCs in the first 72 h of life in infants <32 weeks gestational age (GA) was performed. Baseline data was obtained from a preceding 34-month period. The study intervention consisted of information from the pre-intervention audit, surface anatomy images of the newborn for optimal UC positioning, and weight-based calculations to estimate insertion depths for endotracheal intubation. A prospective evaluation of radiological placement of ETTs and UCs was then conducted over a 12-month period. During the study period, 211 infants had at least one of the three procedures performed. PPMs are a special case of Bayesian Partition models. They use partially exchangeable priors where given a partition ρ of the objects into k sets, the objects in the same set are exchangeable and the objects belonging to distinct sets are independent. PPMs specify prior probabilities for a random partition and update these into posterior distributions of the same form. They provide a convenient way of allowing the data to weight the partitions likely to hold. Posterior estimates of the parameter of interest are obtained by conditioning on the partition and averaging over all generated partitions. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques are used to generate partitions of the data. PPMs can be applied to many diverse estimation problems and in this paper we outline two areas where they are useful.

The primary outcome was the presence of normocarbia, based on partial pressure of CO2 (PaCO2) readings obtained in the neonatal intensive care unit within an hour of birth. Methods: Multi-channel conventional EEG, reviewed by experts, was used to determine the electrographic seizure burden in hourly epochs. The maximum seizure burden evaluated 1 h before each phenobarbitone dose (T-1) was compared to seizure burden in periods of increasing duration after each phenobarbitone dose had been administered (T+1, T+2 to seizure offset). Infants <32 weeks' gestation had simultaneous multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), and heart rate (HR) monitoring. EEG grades were combined with gestational age (GA) and quantitative features of HR and SpO2 in a logistic regression model to predict outcome. Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III assessed 2 year neurodevelopmental outcome. A clinical course score, grading infants at discharge as high or low morbidity risk, was used to compare performance with the model. Forty-three infants were included: 27 had good outcomes, 16 had poor outcomes or died.
