Using audiovisual material in the language classroom is a common resource for teachers since it introduces variety, provides exposure to nonverbal cultural elements and, most importantly, presents linguistic and cultural aspects of communication in their context. However, teachers using this resource face the difficulty of finding active tasks that will engage learners and discourage passive viewing. ClipFlair proposes working with AV material productively while also motivating learners by getting them to revoice or caption a clip. Revoicing is a term used to refer to (re)recording voice onto a clip, as in dubbing, free commentary, audio description and karaoke singing. The term captioning refers to adding written text to a clip, such as standard subtitles, annotations and intertitles. Clips can be short video or audio files, in...

The tests are chiefly intended to check whether pre-established language levels for the subjects that are part of the syllabus match those actually attained by students upon completion of the subjects in question. We will describe the test process, including the characteristics of the tests and how they are carried out, the characteristics of the sample studied, the instrument used, the results obtained and the trends observed. The ultimate purpose of the tests is to improve the training students receive, as the results obtained will serve as a basis for changing or correcting the different...

Fisica o Quimica is set in a secondary school in Madrid. Its main characters are teenagers and teachers, and its storyline revolves around the relationships between them. The series features dialogues containing many colloquial and rude expressions typical of the language used by youngsters, as well as scenes portraying youngsters’ interest in religion, sex, drugs, and social groups. The paper shows the impact of ideological orientations on the translated version, and how this has led to distortions, altered meanings or even the complete removal of elements deemed taboo.

This article presents the design of our Translation Competence research project and the first results of a pilot test carried out to evaluate our research design and the instruments that will be used in the experiment. The first results of the pilot test are related to decision-taking in the translation process and the interrelation between the use of internal and external support. The results point to differences in the processes followed by professional translators and other language professionals. Furthermore, the pilot test has proved the reliability of our instruments.

The project aims to propose level descriptors as a first step towards developing a common European framework of reference for translation’s academic and professional arenas. The project is a continuation of PACTE’s previous experimental research on translation competence and its acquisition. Representatives of both academic and professional arenas participate in the project. It is organized into three stages, the first of which involved the production of a first level descriptor proposal, including a three-level scale with sub-levels and five descriptive categories (language competence; cultural, world knowledge, and thematic competence; instrumental competence; translation service provision competence; and translation problem solving competence). This proposal produced is to be evaluated by experts from the...
