In this study the aesthetic value of slow zeybeks, one of the authentic musical form of Anatolia,... more In this study the aesthetic value of slow zeybeks, one of the authentic musical form of Anatolia, is discussed through Kantian mathemathical sublime. For this purpose, firstly, the historical background of sublime is outlined and the importance of Kant's position in this issue is revealed both by its historical and contemporary aspects. Secondly, some functions of imagination in the Critique of Pure Reason are ascertained in its detail. Depending on this, mathematical sublime is analyzed through imagination in the Critique of The Power of Judgment. Due to its importance for our study, status of music in Kant's philosophy is ascertained, so the question whether it is legitimate to speak on music on the basis of Kant's views is answered considering his negative attitude towards music and indecisive statements about the issue. Then, characteristic musical features of slow zeybeks are elaborated, and based upon this background, the question of how to evaluate folk songs belonging to this genre through mathematical sublime is answered. As a result, it is revealed that the aesthetic value of slow zeybeks, one of the authentic musical form of Anatolia, can be evaluated in the context of the sublime, and that slow zeybeks constitute an excellent example of the mathematical sublime as defined by Kant.

Imagination is one of the key concepts for Hume as well as for Kant. This concept which has been ... more Imagination is one of the key concepts for Hume as well as for Kant. This concept which has been in use since Ancient Greece comes to undertake different functions in the hands of these two philosophers from its classical functions, and becomes important in a way that is unprecedented. Although there are many fundamental differences between Kant and Hume in terms of their systems, the way they use the concept in question shows significant similarities. These similarities become an obvious overlap especially in the issues like Hume's understanding of "self", Kant's understanding of "empirical apperception" and the importance of "association". In this article, the continuity between the two philosophers is discussed through imagination by taking into account Treatise, Enquiry and Critique of Pure Reason, especially its section known as Transcendental Deduction. While doing this, the usage of imagination in the history of philosophy is also briefly mentioned, and it is shown in what ways Hume and Kant differed from their predecessors in this respect, and then what ways Kant had access to Hume's works is discussed. Thus, one of the intellectual sources of Kant is shed light on by clarifying the impact of Hume on Kant through imagination.

Every culture employs some motifs that are peculiar to its semantic world. These motifs have a vi... more Every culture employs some motifs that are peculiar to its semantic world. These motifs have a vital importance for understanding some issues within the cultures in which they function as their codes. Some of these motifs that emerge in different cultures and eras have, surprisingly, very common meanings despite their varieties in time and place. One of these motifs frequently encountered in different times and cultures is 'apple'. In this study, the motif of apple is discussed by pointing out its meanings in different cultures, and then the Abrahamic religions are examined in this context. Finally, this motif is analyzed in the context of Anatolian folk songs. In this way, the meanings that cannot be understood in a folk song text by means of ordinary reading are clarified, and the relations of this motif in Anatolian folk songs and other cultures are introduced.

In this study, Âşık (Troubadour) Veysel and his poems are studied in the context of oral culture.... more In this study, Âşık (Troubadour) Veysel and his poems are studied in the context of oral culture. For this purpose, firstly the basic properties of oral culture are discussed through the concepts of “memory”, “poem” and “music”. In accordance with the mentioned purpose, the impact of oral culture on the human mind is shown via the concept of “critique”. Furthermore, some essential information is given about the cultural environment in which Âşık Veysel grew up and its connection to the oral culture is discussed. In the next section, some considerations are made on Âşık Veysel by examining the basic properties of oral culture, and thus the works that are written on him are discussed critically. Lastly, it has been suggested that on the basis of the general framework stated in this study, most of the misunderstandings and prejudgments can easily be solved.

“Perde” (veil/pitch) is a term gaining certain technical meanings not only in music but also in S... more “Perde” (veil/pitch) is a term gaining certain technical meanings not only in music but also in Sûfȋsm, as well. Although it is not emphasized in academic studies, classical texts show us that this term indicates a common worldview in aforementioned areas. Thus, the preference of this term is not accidental; since there is a close relation between its usage in music and Sûfȋsm. In addition, examining this term in detail basing on its usage in both music and Sûfȋsm can be suggested to broaden our horizon in the field of philosophy. Therefore, the present study primarily discusses the term “perde” (veil/pitch) within the context of Sûfȋsm and music, and then tries to present the analogical issues in these areas concerning the usage of this term. Finally, the article tries to make predictions regarding its transmission from Sûfȋsm and music to the philosophical terminology and make some suggestions given the contemporary thought.

Language constitutes one of the main institutions of a society in that it is possible not only to... more Language constitutes one of the main institutions of a society in that it is possible not only to produce ideas but also to communicate and convey the social values to the next generations through it. In this respect, both the development of language and linguistic consciousness have a vital importance. However, most of the issues concerning language are discussed in an ideological course in Turkey. As a matter of fact, these discussions cannot produce efficient results. In this study, by leaving aside the ideological approaches, the properties of the language which occurred in the poetry of 19th century troubadours are investigated, and on this basis the probable solutions about our contemporary language problems are proposed. In this way, the subject is tackled through a historical continuity and the subjective and ideological approaches are eliminated as well.
