US Factory Orders Fall for 2nd Month
New orders for manufactured goods in the US fell by 0.5% from the previous month to $584.2 billion in September of 2024, extending the revised 0.8% decline in August and loosely in line with market expectations of a 0.4% drop. The result aligned with other key data that underscored the weakening momentum of the US manufacturing sector. Declines were noted for durable goods-producing industries (-0.7%), led by transportation equipment (-3.1% to $95.4 billion) and machinery (-0.2% to $37.6 billion), while an increase for orders by fabricated metal producers softened the blow (2.1% to $37.4 billion). In turn, orders also fell for non-durable goods producers (-0.2%).

US Factory Orders Unexpectedly Ease
New orders for US manufactured goods eased by 0.2% from the previous month to $590.4 billion in August of 2024, trimming the downwardly revised 4.9% jump in the previous month, and missing forecasts that it would have remained unchanged. New orders for nondurable goods fell by 0.5% to $300.8 billion. In the meantime, new orders for durable goods were marginally higher at $289.6 billion, with increases in electrical equipment, appliances, and components (2.4%), machinery (0.4%), and fabricated metal products (0.7%) offsetting declines for transportation equipment (-0.8%). When excluding transportation, manufactured goods orders were 0.1% down.

US Factory Orders Rebound More than Expected
New orders for US manufactured goods rose by 5% from the previous month to $592.1 billion in July of 2024, rebounding from the 3.3% drop in the previous month, and above market expectations of a 4.7% increase, signaling the resilience of the US economy. New orders expanded by 9.8% for durable goods industries, lifted by transportation equipment (34.7%). In the meantime, orders in non-durable goods industries rose by 0.8%. Excluding transportation, factory orders rose by a significantly softer 0.4%.
