Retail sales in Spain surged by 2.3% year-on-year in August 2024, following an upwardly revised 1.1% increase in the prior month and surpassing forecasts of a 2.3% rise. It marked the strongest growth in retail activity since last December, mainly due to higher sales of non-food products (+3.7%), of which household equipment (+3.9%) and personal goods (+1.2%). Meanwhile, spending on food products was more modest (+0.8%). Sales increased mostly in large chain stores (+3.5%), single retail stores (+3.1%) and small chain stores (+2.4%), but declined for e-commerce (-7.4%) and at department stores (-2%). On a monthly basis, retail sales went up by 0.4% in August, after a 0.5% rise in the prior month. Year-to-date, retail sales grew by 1% over the same period a year ago.
