Japanese companies increased spending on plant and equipment by 6.8% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2024, rising for the twelfth consecutive quarter but slowing from a 16.4% gain in the fourth quarter of 2023. The latest figure also missed market expectations for a 12.2% growth. Industries that contributed most to the gain in capital spending were general-purpose machinery (95.1%), food (26.5%), fabricated metal products (26.1%), transportation equipment (25.7%) and goods rental & leasing (19.2%). Meanwhile, the information & communications sector reduced capital spending by 10.4%.

Japan Capital Spending Jumps 16.4% in Q4
Japanese companies increased spending on plant and equipment by 16.4% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2023, rising for the eleventh straight quarter and accelerating from a 3.4% gain in the third quarter d as corporate activity continued to recover from the pandemic-induced slowdown. Industries that contributed most to the gain in capital spending were information & communication electronics equipment (65.8%), business-oriented machinery (62.8%) and goods & rental leasing (42.5%). Meanwhile, industries that reduced capital spending include production, transmission & distribution of electricity (-21.6%), petroleum & coal products (-11.7%) and fabricated metal products (-11%).
