Many risk factors and prognostic factors of breast cancer have been identified but the associations between mast cell infiltration and the clinical features of breast cancer remain unclear. The aim of the study was to estimate the mast cells number in malignant tumors and axillary lymph node and to find out any correlation between the number of mast cells and hormone receptor status. An institution based descriptive study was done in a tertiary care hospital. Total 44 specimens of post operative breast tissue with malignant breast lesion & dissected axillary lymph nodes were taken. Counting of mast cells was done in Toluidine blue stain. Immunohistochemical staining was done for ER, PR & HER2/neu using immunostaining kit. It was observed that when the tumor grade increases the number of must cell decreased per high power field. The mast cell count was significantly higher in cases of ER positive a...

Time and motion study for a definite root cause analysis (RCA) is valuable to identify the root causes of problems in the operating events. Aim: The study was undertaken to observe TAT and the causes of increased TAT of blood delivery for transfusion to the admitted patients on an emergency basis at hospital and to formulate plans to rectify them. Materials and Methods: This descriptive longitudinal study was performed on 50 randomly selected admitted patients requiring emergency blood transfusion during a period of six months and were not assisted by volunteers. Another 50 control patients were incorporated, who were accompanied by volunteers who assisted them in getting the blood. RCA of the delays in TAT was done. Time intervals of TAT in the two groups were compared by 2 tailed t-tests for equality of means. The data was analysed using Epi-info 7 an...

Inspite of its high metastasizing ability to various organs and lymph node, orbital metastasis is exceptional. Very few cases have been reported in the world literature. We report orbital metastasis in a case of moderately differentiated rectal adenocarcinoma in a 58-year male patient from India in 2015. We want to focus on the rare metastatic pathway of rectal adenocarcinoma and early diagnosis of the orbital metastasis, which can help in application of therapy to save the eyesight.

Clinical presentation and biochemical tests for liver functions show non-specific abnormality, which is not helpful for diagnosis. As the treatment, modality of isolated hepatic tuberculoma is anti-tubercular drugs. Prognosis is very good in comparison to other differential diagnoses. We are presenting such a rare case of isolated hepatic tuberculoma from tribal area of Bankura district, West Bengal, India in a 38-yr female patient presenting as fever, abdominal pain and solitary nodular lesion on radiological evaluation. Even different imaging modalities cannot make accurate diagnosis of isolated hepatic tuberculoma where simple biopsy and histopathology of the lesion can confirm the diagnosis. Art...

Despite the high prevalence, microfilariae are rarely found in cytology smears. Most of the cases are incidentally found, solely or in association with other pathologies. The study was undertaken to analyze the prevalence and cytology findings of cases of incidentally found microfilariae in cytology smears (fine-needle aspiration cytology [FNAC]/body fluids) from different body parts. This was a retrospective study over 5 years, where the cases of microfilariae in aspirates from swelling of different locations and body fluids were reviewed, and clinic-pathological data were analyzed. Out of 16,738 cases of FNAC and 882 cases of fluid cytology, 22 cases (0.124%) of incidental finding of microfilaria were documented in cytology smears. The cases were diagnosed from lymph nodes (5 cases), skin and soft tissue (4 cases), scrotal (4 cases), breast (3 cases), thyroid (2 cases), and pleural fluid (2 cases). We found eosinophilia in 15 cases (6...

Complex ocular choristoma is a very rare lesion. Very few cases have been reported so far. It may or may not cause visual abnormality depending on its location. Sometimes, it is associated with other congenital abnormalities. Here, we report a case of complex limbal choristoma which was diagnosed at adult age in a 58-year-old male patient and confirmed by histopathological examination.

Cytology of eccrine porocarcinoma has been described in very few previous literature. Here, we present a case of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of eccrine porocarcinoma of the scalp, which is subsequently confirmed by histology. Accurate diagnosis of eccrine porocarcinoma by FNAC is very difficult, but determining the malignant nature of the lesion is crucial for curative surgery. FNAC can be a convenient, safe, and effective approach to solve difficult diagnostic dilemma.

Histologically and cytologically, it is distinctive type having abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, cytoplasmic inclusion with eccentrically placed vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. High recurrence rate and poor outcome are important features. Here, we are presenting a rare case of rhabdoid meningioma found in a recurrent meningioma of the posterior fossa in a middle-aged female. We emphasized the squash cytology and histology finding of the rare neoplasm.

Although some studies have been published regarding pathological pattern of brain tumors from different countries of the world and also from India, comprehensive clinicopathological studies from Eastern India is lacking. Aims: The aim of this study was to observe recent incidence of different brain tumors and to study clinical and histopathological spectrum of brain tumors in Eastern India. Materials and Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional observational study involving 130 cases of brain tumors which were diagnosed during the 3-year study period (January 2010–December 2012). Data regarding clinical presentation and radiological features of all cases were collected from all patients. Histopathological diagnosis was correlated with clinical and radiological diagnosis. Results: We found 130 cases of brain tumor with a male preponderance. The cases were distributed in a wide age range from 4 years to 78 years with the mean age of 42.38 years. Most common tumor type in our study was neuroepithelial tumor (92 cases, 70.76%). Among the neuroepithelial tumors, most frequent subtype was astrocytic tumor (54 cases, 41.5%). The second most frequent brain tumor was meningioma (20 cases, 15.3%). We found higher incidence of oligodendroglial tumor (8.46%) and medulloblastoma (7.69%) in our series. Conclusion: Males are more predispose to brain tumors in comparison to females. Astrocytic tumors are most common subtype in Eastern India. However, the WHO Grade I neoplasms are more frequent brain tumors.

We are presenting a case of ruptured rudimentary horn pregnancy presented as an acute abdominal emergency, treated by laparotomy. Uterine horn with adhered placenta was resected out and sent for histological examination. On histological examination trophoblastic tissues were deeply infiltrated in the myometrium and intervening decidual layer was absent. Final histological report of placenta increta in a rudimentary horn was done. In conclusion, prompt diagnosis and operative management can avoid catastrophe in a case of rupture rudimentary horn pregnancy with placenta increta.

Histologically six sub-types of granulomas found in granulomatous skin diseases- tuberculoid, sarcoidal, necrobiotic, suppurative, foreign body & histoid type. The aims of the present study were clinico-pathological evaluation of granulomatous skin lesions and their etiological classification based on histopathological examination. It was a five years (Jan 2009- Dec 2013) retrospective study involving all the skin biopsies. Detailed clinical and histopathological features were analyzed and granulomatous skin lesions were categorized according to type of granuloma & etiology. Special stains were used in few cases for diagnostic purpose. Among 1280 skin biopsies, 186 cases (14.53%) were granulomatous skin lesions with a ratio 1:24. In histopathological sub-typing, tuberculoid granuloma was most common type (126 cases, 67.74%). Most common etiology of granuloma in the study was ...
