Grace and gratitude before meals

Do we value food, and happiness and the company of people more than the money we make? And will the money we make, eventually compensate us for the loss of appetite, joy and togetherness?

It is when we are eating that we seem most vulnerable, most unguarded, most open. There are times when I feel that if one wants to know the character of a person, there is no better time, or occasion, than to be with them when they are eating food.

The two categories of eaters

Out of all the different sorts of people that I have come across, I divide the eaters that I see into two categories: those who love to eat, and those who consider it a chore. Every kind of eater falls into either of these two categories.

I have seen people who gobble their food so quickly, without even tasting the different flavours that make up the food, that they almost choke over it. I am married to one of that kind. I have seen people who are angry that they are hungry, because they feel that they should not be eating. This kind of people are either trying to…
