In this study, we used a systematic review method. Secondary data were used to support the points raised in this study from various sources, including reference books and studies published in both national and international journals. The review is limited to the challenges of the accreditation process in Nigerian higher institutions, analyzing its implications, and suggesting strategies to enhance university accreditation integrity.
The paper concluded that lack of qualified educators, resistance to change, time and effort required, compliance with standards, corruption and bribery inadequate funding, stakeholders roles, and technological infrastructure are the challenges of accreditation process. However, the implications of these challenges are a lack of accountability and transparency, limited quality of education, undermining the credibility and integrity of the process, lack of resources and infrastructure. To address these challenges, the study suggests the strategies for enhancing university accreditation integrity which includes; strengthening of stakeholders roles, capacity building, implementation of anti-corruption measures, diversification of funding sources, and investment in technological infrastructure.
The study recommended that; accreditation panel pays unannounced visit to institutions, government fund the university education system, accreditation bodies mandate the involvement of university students in the process of accreditation, and university administrators be enlightened on the implications of accreditation dishonesty.
