It was created following the occupation of a former building of the wastewater treatment plant of Aïre in August 2018 in Geneva. The occupation of this building named "Porteous" initiated a process of transformation of the place into a cultural and social center in an incremental way inspired by the approach of the famous architect Patrick Bouchain. After a brief presentation of the history of the building and the different ways it was used, the focus is on the actors involved in the project. The central question posed by this work is the role of activists and associations in Geneva in the implementation of participatory processes known as " bottom-up approach". This question is brought up by the presentation of the project-work carried out within the framework of the Master ProPart of the IUAV of Venice, consisting of the planning of the participatory building site aiming at the rehabilitation of a space of the Porteous building into a gathering space dedicated to the elaboration of the general project. Thus, the first part of this work presents Porteous in its context, starting with the history of the building, from its construction to the present day, and then addressing briefly the cultural and social aspects of the project. The second part introduces the project-work (practical work) which consists mainly in the planification of the worksite for the "Cabane de Chantier " which is meant to be open, participative and cultural. It is followed by an overview of the practical work in an attempt to share experiences that can be used for the planning of future building sites of this kind. Finally, in the last part, I will attempt to address the theme of bottom-up approaches linked to the practices of self-organization by highlighting the process of assimilation of the alternative culture in the Geneva context (Pattaroni 2020, 15) and then relating it to the case of Porteous in an attempt to analyze the roles played by the Porteous association throughout the project as well as the power structures in action. The role of the activist and associative milieu in bottom-up processes is central because it allows the cultural and social practices of appropriation of space by the population to become visible. These practices, which often evolve outside of the state normative apparatus, claim the power to redefine these norms through in situ experimentation. The case of Porteous presents an innovative way of composing between the praxis of self-organization and that of the structures of the public administration which offers the prospect of a collaboration taking into better consideration the needs and requests of the population as regards cultural and social spaces.
