This study investigates the role of appraisals by employees of how work is affecting their health... more This study investigates the role of appraisals by employees of how work is affecting their health, or could end up affecting it in the future. The study tests a model of health appraisals as a mediator of the effect of demands and control on employee attitudes (job satisfaction, organizational commitment and turnover intentions). This was investigated in a sample of employees in a Swedish white-collar organization, who participated in three waves of a longitudinal study conducted in 2007, 2008 and 2009; a final sample of 292 employees participated at all three waves. The results indicate that employee appraisals of how work affects their health have an important role in how working conditions relate to subsequent work-related attitudes. The study supports the importance of including employee appraisals when studying the effects of working conditions.
ABSTRACT Modern working life involves higher demands on individual responsibility, blurrier lines... more ABSTRACT Modern working life involves higher demands on individual responsibility, blurrier lines between work and private life, increasing flexibility as regards the scheduling of work hours including a high variability from week-to-week or day-to-day, temporary employment contracts and job insecurity, and unstable organizational conditions. This development has raised concerns regarding job-related stress in Sweden, as well as in other countries, and underscored the need to create sustainable psychosocial work conditions for economic competitiveness and occupational health and safety. This chapter aims to provide an overview of psychosocial risk factors characterizing the contemporary Swedish working life, to describe the institutional frameworks that regulate work environment issues, and to describe how various actors work to prevent psychosocial risk factors. The following section outlines work environment trends and the Swedish system in terms of legislation, various actors on the labor market and so on. Drawing on this, we highlight four sets of psychosocial risk factors (flexible work, working hours, new demands at work, and organizational restructuring) before describing activities related to prevention, health promotion at work and healthy work practices. La actual vida laboral implica mayores exigencias en la responsabilidad individual, la existencia de líneas difusas entre el trabajo y la vida privada, la necesidad de un aumento de la flexibilidad en la programación de las horas de trabajo incluyendo una alta flexibilidad entre las semanas o incluso los días, las contrataciones temporales y la inseguridad en el trabajo, además de unas inestables condiciones de la propia organización. Este desarrollo se ha manifestado a través de una preocupación más intensiva por el trabajo en Suecia, al igual que en otros países y se ha destacado la necesidad de crear condiciones de trabajo psicosocialmente sostenibles para contribuir a la competitividad económica y a la seguridad y la salud en el trabajo. Este trabajo tiene por objeto proporcionar una visión general de los factores de riesgo psicosocial que caracterizan la actual vida laboral en Suecia, con la intención de describir los marcos institucionales que regulan las cuestiones relativas al entorno laboral y la descripción del funcionamiento de los diversos agentes para evitar factores de riesgo psicosocial. El siguiente apartado describe las tendencias de actuación del sistema sueco sobre el entorno de trabajo en lo que respecta a la legislación, a los distintos actores que intervienen en el mercado de trabajo, para a partir de ello, subrayar cuatro grupos de factores de riesgo psicosocial (el trabajo flexible, las horas de trabajo, las nuevas exigencias en el trabajo y la reestructuración de la organización) antes de describir las actividades relacionadas con la prevención, la promoción de la salud en el trabajo y las prácticas saludables de trabajo.
The present artide takes into account theoretical and empirical issues which influence our unders... more The present artide takes into account theoretical and empirical issues which influence our understanding of job insecurity, a phenomenon which has received more attention along with the increased flexibilization of working life. The main purpose of the artide is to contribute to the understanding of the influence job insecurity has, and show areas where more research is necessary. We base our discussion on a definition of job insecurity as a subjectively experienced stressor, which reflects the perception that one's present employment is threatened. Our literature review shows, firstly, that there may be dillerent aspeels of job insecurity with, to some extent, dillerent consequences for work related attitudes and well-being. Secondly, given that the present knowledge of the concept to a great extent is based on cross-sectional studies, more longitudinal research is needed before we know if and how job insecurity is related to changes in attitudes and well-being. Thirdly, we identify factors which may moderate the relation between job insecurity and its assumed consequences. We maintain that further theoretical as well as empirical research is needed in order to increase our understanding of what job insecurity is and what consequences it can have for the individual.
