However, the stucco ornamentation that fills the stalactite cornice of their lanterns has not yet been studied seriously until now. This paper attempts to survey the history stalactite cornice décor in Central Asian minarets and muqarnas' stucco ornamentation. Three types of the ornamental motifs were studied regionally to identify their variations and to offer their comparative, stylistic analysis. The said motifs were found to have been well developed in the Sassanid art and undergone certain changes of form in early Islamic art. We find a tradition of filling lanterns with stucco ornamentation to have already matured by the 12th century in Central Asia. The history of studies of those minarets' architectural décor cannot be considered complete without this paper.

The issue of what is termed ‘hidden’ zoomorphic

this historical and theoretical problem. Regardless
the raise of ornament sense in the period of 9th–12th

The study was conducted on the material of
carved gunch (stucco), as the most representative
material, containing valuable information about
the architectural ornamentation of early Islam

Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). The study
covered the time span of the 9th to 12th century,
as the most flourishing period of gunch technic.

Architectual Decoration in the World of Islam Traditional Ganch Carving in Contemporary Uzbekistan / Islamovedenie. 2017. Vol.8 , No.2 (32). pp. 55-66., Mar 2017

Today’s craftsmen have inherited a wealth of ornamental floral and geometric arabesque patterns that had been developed by the 12th century on the basis of islimi and girih and reconsidered in later centuries. Addressing to the most significant architectural monuments of the 20th century, the author points at the new epoch’s ambivalent attitude to the traditional technique and ornamentation, as well as the search of new methods of expression that would comly with contemporary trends. The author concludes that the 20th century did not essentially enrich the traditional ganch carving with new techniques and ornamentation.

Hidden (?) vs. realistic images of animals in the light of the culture of Islam. Ganch decor of the IX-XII centuries in central Asia // Islamovedenie, 2019, No.3 (41), vol.10, pp.41-52, Aug 2019

For many years, zoomorphic motifs were considered intentionally concealed in floral ornament in order to circumvent the Islamic prohibition of depicting living creatures. The author examines carved stucco (gunch) as a very informative and representative source of early Islamic architectural ornament. The study uses the comparative historic method to describe and classify the "hidden" zoomorphisms and cites analogues; also analysed are mediaeval theologians' opinions on the content of the canonic prohibition. The author makes the following conclusions: although ornamentation grew in significance in the 9th to 12th century, the tradition of quite realistic depiction of animals continued and retained a significance of its own. "Encrypted" zoomoprphisms can rather be considered ultimately stylized floral motifs. The author suggests tracing their development paths from realistic to most abstract floral forms.
