The archaeology educator developing programs for schools ought to have a clear understanding of how museums provide basic archaeology education to the general public, and especially to the literally millions of North American schoolchildren who visit them each year. This chapter explores the issues of archaeology education in museum settings and presents a sample program for school children visiting a museum. Museums are institutions for learning. Education in museums is not a new concept. It seems obvious that a museum would develop educational programming based on its own collection, but this has been a debated point. Archaeologists share with musicologists the responsibilities and the rewards of bringing the past to the present.
