This article presents a novel design of a bipolar current-pulsed power supply (BCPPS) for shallow electromagnetic detection. Problems of acquiring current pulses with low oscillation and low energy cost are analyzed in detail and relevant solutions are given. An improved topology based on a constant-voltage clamping circuit is proposed to satisfy the demands of supplying the highly inductive load. The relationship between the main steady-state parameters of the proposed BCPPS is provided and the shape of current pulses can be adjusted flexibly by changing the duty cycles of the switching signals in the topology. A feedforward control strategy to realize constant-current transmitting is proposed and the digital controller is designed. Compared with different existing current-pulsed sources, the topology in this article is characterized by high repeat frequency, low energy cost, and low switching interference. A laboratory prototype with a maximum peak current of 50 A and repeat frequency of 500 Hz is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed topology.
