As an educator I am currently helping to develop a new mechanical engineering degree program for accreditation at Saint Ambrose University, a small private university in Davenport, Iowa.
As an experimental researcher, I have studied multiphase flows, specializing in fluidized bed hydrodynamics, visualization and modeling. My research has shown that relatively inexpensive X-ray visualization techniques can be used to experimentally observe local time-average multiphase flow properties of laboratory scale fluidized beds. Analysis techniques that I developed using these observations produce data sets that can be used as benchmarks for validating computational fluid dynamic simulations. In doing this work, I developed an analytical image processing suite that can process both 2D and 3D digital images. This suite includes statistical, filtering, spatial manipulation, false coloring, and analytical functions that do work using parallel computing techniques.
In other personal projects, I have been coding a data mining suite that takes the 'temperature' of the American conscience by sampling public social network posts in real-time from Twitter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Tumbler to predict various market fluctuations. In future versions I will apply some type of machine learning technique to this and have a fully automated system.
