This is a famous picture which represents Norway becoming an independent country. The text of the Constitution was finished on 17 May 1814, and was signed by Christian Frederick later the same evening, after the assembly had unanimously voted him as King of an independent Norway. So the 17th May is now Norway's Constitution day and National day. The rest of the assembly delegates signed the Constitution the next day, on the 18th. On the original painting you can read the law paragraph number ("Paragraf 115") on the paper being held up and read by Christian Magnus Falsen, and historians have thus dated the event depicted on the painting to 11 May 1814. (In the final version this paragraph ended up as § 110, and today it is § 112.) Around 70 of the 112 delegates that were present are painted in enough detail to be identified.
Important to note that the painting was made 71 years after the historic event.
