Last year the author extended his modular, open-systems, computerized human nervous system functi... more Last year the author extended his modular, open-systems, computerized human nervous system function emulator (HNSFE) by adding simulated hormone action. This year he extends the HNSFE with a related capability: emulation of the effects of therapeutic and non-therapeutic drug use. The opioid narcotic drug model was chosen because of its importance in medicine and because of its potential for misuse. For this research the author utilized a frequency-to-voltage converter (FVC) as an analog calculational element to simulate the effects of drug binding to neural cell membrane receptors. The resulting voltages are utilized in this human narcotic use emulator (HNUE) to represent the level of opioid drug activity at the cellular level which initiates high level somatic and behavioral responses in the HNSFE artificial intelligence system. The HNUE is compatible with the computerized postoperative pain / narcotic dosing model of Liu and Northrop. Some effects of long-term drug use (the development of tolerance, physical and psychological dependence, addiction and the withdrawal syndrome) are emulated.

To decrease the negative impact of these tight quarters, the author has proposed recruiting smaller astronauts (abbreviated SAs), persons about one-half the height of current near-Earth crewmembers. This includes achondroplastic dwarfs, lower extremity amputees and persons with certain height-reducing birth defects such as phocomelia. To overcome issues of physical competence, strength and mobility of SAs, the author describes using advanced cybernetic prostheses for those with limb amputations or deformities, and motorized exoskeletons for the others. This paper outlines some of these advances, then describes how using these new microcontroller features to create a better artificial neuron have improved the author's ten-year-old neural network design.

This paper discusses two kinds of computer-to-human interaction techniques which involve computerizea facial gestures: the first is the graphics representation of the human face projected on a video display; the second is the physical embodiment of facial expressions using an android robot. These simulated facial gestures may be accompanied by computerized speech synthesis, voice recognition capability or machine vision for recognition of the facial expressions of the human viewer. The author reviews both major techniques, then discusses current and proposed applications of this methodology.

After almost 20 years in near Earth orbit with the International Space Station, some countries are planning deep space missions to the asteroid belt, to Mars and beyond. Astronauts who make these journeys will need medical support for these journeys. Earth-based telemedicine would be satisfactory for non-critical problems, but for emergencies including surgical procedures the round-trip radio time delay beyond the Moon would require a physician among the crew. The author proposes inclusion of a robotic surgeon on these missions that has a semi-autonomous operation. Most of the technology needed for such a device is already in existence, waiting for system integration.
