The Waking of Willowby Hall
A downloadable game
Physical copies are available here.
I’ve run The Waking of Willowby Hall more times than any other adventure. Every time it has been one of the best gaming experiences of my life. It’s a masterpiece of modern TTRPG design.
- Mike Mearls, Co-Lead Designer of Dungeons & Dragons 5e
Absolutely excellent . . . a masterclass in usable design. The scenario provided within is dynamic and inventive, and the aesthetics of the product are absolutely dynamite and point towards, I think, a new sort of poetics for the old-school space moving forward.
- ava, bones of contention
There is A LOT to do in this adventure. Buttons to push . . . things to interact with, flee from, and leverage to your own ends. Great f****** adventure.
- Bryce Lynch, ten foot pole
The Waking of Willowby Hall is a dense, highly interactive RPG adventure set in a ruined manor beset by a rampaging giant, roving bands of restless dead, and a very angry goose.
- Suitable for PCs of approximately 3rd level.
- Features a highly interactive environment that rewards clever play.
- Perfect for one-shots or for dropping into an existing campaign.
- Contains "One Page Dungeon" maps that allow the DM to run much of the adventure at a glance.
- Uses bullet points and control-panel layout for maximum ease of use.
- Statted for Knave, but easily useable with any old-school fantasy RPG.
- Writing, layout, and cartography by two-time ENnie Award winner Ben Milton, author of Maze Rats, Knave, and Jim Henson's Labyrinth: The Adventure Game.
- Lavishly illustrated by Sam Mameli.
Download includes:
- Two versions of the adventure, one with two-page spreads and one without.
- The full wraparound cover image
- Blank, unkeyed maps for use with virtual tabletops
The manor of Willowby Hall is under siege by a giant, enraged at the theft of his magical goose. The band of thieves has taken shelter within the manor's crumbling walls, cowering with their ill-gotten poultry as the building shakes itself apart. But something else is stirring. The giant's rampage is slowly awakening a Death Knight from its black slumber, and once it rises it will call on the bones of the manor's old residents to drive out the intruders.
Will the party loot the manor of its ancient relics, or succumb to the blades of its skeletal guardians? Who will make off with the goose and its golden eggs? Will anyone survive the giant's onslaught? The only way to find out...is to play.

Heya,
I recently polled my followers on Mastodon which product on DriveThru I should translate to German (I'm a freelance RP translator) and this gem came up in the replies. I haven't found any other way to contact you, so I hope this works.
Please, let me know if you're generally interested in this, and we can set out to work on some kind of deal. I'd be keen to make this happen. :)
Cheers,
thom
Hi thom, I am going to run this module at a con in German. Did you go forward with the translation? If not, would you be down to translate it together within the next two weeks (at least a usable draft)?
Hey there,
that's a tough deadline. I have a Cthulhu thing for proof reading on my desk and a layout job as well. So ... possibly. ;)
How would you want to do this? I just send you the raw text and you put it into a layouted format? That's the only way I could see any hope for this working out so quickly :)
I know it's not much time but I need to do the translation either way and would be happy in the case of any collaboration. If you could send me the raw text, I would go look for matching fonts now and then put everything together later :) that's even more than I hoped for!
Alrighty. I'm about done with the layout stuff, and will just focus on Willowby Hall for a while. Just bought the module, will get to work asap.
Please provide me with an email adress, so I can send you stuff as I get it done.
Oh great news! Sure, send it to me via email! I am preparing the layout and already found all the original fonts already. All of them were freely available (mostly Google fonts) and they support umlauts. :)
EDIT: For the Con I already translated the title to "Das Erwachen des Gutshauses Weidenhof" but thought about switching "Gutshaus" for "Anwesen" but you are surely a better than I am :)
Extracted, downloaded and installed all the fonts and just started playing with Illustrator. Did some translation in deepl and didn't give it much thought yet. Takes some time but when reducing the font size from 10 to 9 for the German text (and reducing the removing the space between paragraphs...) it fits snugly into the space (my screenshots are not perfectly aligned): https://imgur.com/a/k1tYnJE
EDIT: Just read the deepl tranlsation the first time now and oh boy it's weird. I would keep "old-school" and do not translate the word lol
EDIT2: tried fixing the bad translation a bit in regards of saving space. I think I get the hang of it! Happy to receive your translation and layouting it :-) https://imgur.com/a/KGj2pQt
Hello, in your experience on average how many sessions does it take to finish the adventure? Also do any changes need to be made to the adventure if you use the knave 2e draft?
In my experience it can be done within one longer or two shorter session, so maybe 3-5 hours.
Hello Ben, congratulations for this adventure. Besides Knave, is it feasible to run it on Whitehack 3e without any adjustments?
I'm not familiar enough with Whitehack 2e to say, sorry. It should work pretty seamlessly with OSR systems that use hit dice, AC, d20 attack rolls, etc.
Thanks!!!
do the unkeyed maps still include the secret doors?
This is wonderful! Excellent work. Great for a one-shot or a session in a campaign.
Looking forward to running this! It looks excellent from the brief skim I've given it.
