Pellegrino Matarazzo says he won't be the next USMNT coach

Hoffenheim head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo has denied recent reports that he was nearing a deal to coach the U.S. men’s national team.

Over the weekend, Kicker reported Matarazzo was offered the USMNT head coaching job, while Bild said the New Jersey native informed Hoffenheim that he wanted to leave to take the position.

But on Tuesday, Matarazzo aimed to put that speculation to rest.

“It is enormously important to create clarity and calm at this unsettling time,” the 46-year-old told Hoffenheim’s website.

“I’m proud to be the coach of this team and I’m really looking forward to taking part in European competition with the boys this season. I’m convinced that with the right additions to the squad, we’ll have another successful season.”

Matarazzo has become a favored choice for the USMNT job due to his American background and success as a Bundesliga manager — first with Stuttgart and then with Hoffenheim, which he led to a seventh-place finish and European place last season.

“For us, there was and still is no doubt that we will start the new season with our coach at the helm,” added Frank Kramer, Hoffenheim’s interim sporting director.

“Last season and the final days at the training camp have shown that the coaching team and the squad are heading in the same direction. We’re all looking forward to a successful season together.”

The USMNT position has been vacant since Gregg Berhalter was dismissed last month in the wake of the team’s stunning group-stage exit at the Copa América.
