This paper contains the notes to book 1, "Die Löwen von Achaia". Rearranging the information passed by Plutarch and Polybius from an autobiographic perspective, as in Aratus' original Hypomnemata, has been an illuminating process with surprising results, showing that some passages (which have often been attributed to other sources) work really well inside the narrative, while others remain problematic. This allows to better place them not only inside the original text, but also regarding chronology. One example is Aratus gaining the Egyptian king's benevolence thanks to the famous Sicyonian Art School (p.104). Even more significant is Antigonus II Gonatas' goodwill speech (Plut. Ar. 15) which was held immediately after the famous wedding that allowed him to wrestle control of the Acrocorinth from the hands of the spouse Nicaea (Ar. 17). By placing these episodes in chronological disorder, Plutarch has puzzled many researchers. But a close study of their purpose and narrative style reveals that the entire story comes from the Hypomnemata and as a result the alleged chronological problems simply disappear (pp. 83, 267 and especially 270). Finding that these episodes had a specific purpose in the memories of Aratus, allows to shed new light on the character and rhetoric style of the Hypomnemata, often characterized by a good deal of irony. The notes of particular scientific interest have been highlighted.
2nd improved edition, 2024
By far the most important scientific discoveries in this volume come from the beginning of Polybius fourth book (Histories IV 3-19), the Aetolian invasion in the Peloponnese leading to the battle of Caphyae and the sack of Cynaetha. Relying on a previous essay by Andrew Meadows, it can be shown that Polybius based these passages on two speeches held by Aratos in 220, during a summer assembly in Sicyon and at the autumn assembly in Aegium. Polybius' adaption appears to be full of manipulations, misunderstandings, doublets and other blunders (pp. 65-87). The upsetting evidence proving these findings is collected in one long note on p. 85.
Considering this new evidence the following sections then try to establish how much of Polybius' account may be based on notes or speeches by Aratus, especially regarding Philipp's campaigns in the Peloponnese and the famous intrigue of the tutor Apelles. At least one other doubtful passage in Polybius, probably a doublet, appears in the account of the allied retreat after the sack of Thermon. In V 13.3-6 and V 14.1-7 Polybius relates two Aetolian attacks, near Thermon and near Stratos, with many similarities (p. 207). Probably the historian, using two different sources, didn't understand that they were referring to the same event. This blunder is not at all secondary, because John Grainger, The League of the Aetolians, 1999, p. 208, uses Polybius' numbers to establish the total strength of the Aetolian army. If the doublet is confirmed, his numbers must be considered far too high.
On p. 269 a cold case from the year 221 BC is resolved, the murder of the Egyptian prince Magas. The name of the assassin is revealed as well as those who sent him.
On p. 313 the mystery of the authorship of Anthologia Graeca VI 115 is explained.
Again there are many references to Hellenistic literature and philosophy, as well as numerous quotations from ancient Greek comedy.
Elected 16 times strategos of the Achaean League, Aratos was the democratic leader of a federation of cities in a multipolar world dominated by five superpowers. The challenges he faced bear many similarities to those threatening the European democracies in the 21st century. The life of Aratus is an intricate story with many doubtful passages, but with the help of these notes the understanding of various problems can be increased.
This paper contains the notes to book 3, "Der Krieg des Kleomenes", and those of particular scientific interest have been highlighted in the text. In this volume new aspects are presented on the story and historiography of the Cleomenean war. Examples are Antigonus III Doson and the Macedonian strategy (p. 57-63, 208, 214, 304-305, 325), the occupation of East-Arcadia by Kleomenes (p. 64), historiographic tendencies in Phylarchus and Polybius (pp. 65, 126, 145, 179, 201, 265, 281, 284, 313, 316, 390), Aratus' rivalry with Lydiadas (p. 74), Aratus' fear of a triple alliance (p. 88), ancient writers on tactics (pp. 91, 142, 224-227), the Spartan strategy (p. 92), the Achaean strategy (pp. 93, 119), Cleomenes' coup d'état (pp. 126-132), Aratus' secret embassy in Macedonia and its treatment in Polybius (pp. 154, 179-181), the Egyptian puppeteering (pp. 158, 167, 220), the propaganda war between Aratus and Kleomenes (pp. 125, 181-182, 194), Aratus' irony and rhetoric tricks (p. 211), the Achaeans' diplomatic efforts (p. 213), the Aetolian and Athenian neutrality (pp. 220-222, 227), the end of Aristomachus of Argos (pp. 281, 284), the new symmachy (p. 299), the war crimes in Mantineia (pp. 304, 317, 322), a doublet in Plutarch (p. 336), and the battle of Sellasia (pp. 337-351, 376). There are also many references to Hellenistic philosophy and numerous quotations from ancient Greek comedy.

The challenges he faced bear many similarities to those threatening the European democracies in the 21st century. This paper contains the notes to book 2, "Die Tyrannen von Argos", and those of particular scientific interest have been highlighted in the text. Among the most interesting ideas presented here is a new solution for the beginning of the Aetolian presence in East-Arcadia (pp. 35, 44, 48) and the consequences for the Aetolian-Achaean-alliance (pp. 85, 94, 145, 147), as well as a reconstruction of the campaign that led to the battle of Phylakia (pp. 214, 227) and a different reading for the inscription FD III 4.239 (p. 236) regarding the Aetolian Simos in Skiros.
A new interpretation is also proposed for Plutarch, Aratos 29.5-6 (p. 124) and similar passages, shedding new light on the purpose and character of the Hypomnemata.

Aratus' biography is an intricate affair, but with the help of these notes the understanding of many problems and doubts can be increased.
This paper contains the notes to book 1, "Die Löwen von Achaia". The other books will follow soon.
The notes of particular scientific interest have been highlighted.
On a scientific level this chapter corrects Plutarch's convulsed chronology, especially regarding Ar. 15.

Abstract: "Strategos" is a historic novel in German language that tries to reconstruct the Memories of the Hellenistic statesman Aratos of Sikyon (272-213 BC) for a better understanding of his career and his work as a historian. New scientific insight will be indicated in the notes as well as in the introductory abstract of each chapter.
Chapter 5 (My apprenticeship in Achaea) falls in several parts. First comes a description of the Peloponnese around 250 BC. Then the author explains the reasons why Sikyon joined the Achaean League, in order to defend democratic government, similar to what the Americans did in 1776/87 and the Europeans in the second half of the 20th century. Third we witness the battle of Mantineia in 250 or 249 BC. Next follows a discussion of the Achaean Constitution with a detailed diagram. The narration continues with Aratos' election as Strategos of the League in 245 and his first military campaign in Central Greece. An analysis of the national character of the Achaeans is the occasion for a description of the tsunami that submerged the ancient capital of Helice in 373 BC. Finally Aratos' standing among the Achaeans after his first year in office is analyzed.
Regarding the disputed battle of Agis near Mantineia, as reported in Pausanias VIII 10, the narration centers on the solution proposed by Beloch with a brief discussion in the notes.
Chapter 4, Die Reise nach Ägypten, part 2 deals with Aratos' travels in Egypt, his attendance at the Dionysiac festival in Alexandria as described by Kallixenos of Rhodes and his return to the Peloponnese.
There is also a discussion on technological progress in Alexandria and the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, with a presentation of the leading engineers of the period and ancient historiographers like Hecataeus, Herodotus, Ktesias, Manetho and others.
In the notes a famous saying often attributed to Thucydides is shown to be a modern hoax.
A reconstruction of the Memories of Aratos of Sikyon by Peter Weber.
Chapter 4 (Part 1): Aratos travels to Egypt, seeking assistance from king Ptolemy to overcome the domestic troubles in Sicyon. This chapter reconstructs the voyage as well as the visit to the king and the outcome.
Most of the chapter is a vivid description of Ptolemaic Egypt at the eyes of a young traveler from Greece, that is, a cultural history of Hellenism offering a close view at Ptolemaic administration and their ambitions abroad. Part two is following.
For researchers the most interesting insights will probably regard the chronology of events.
Chapter 3 (The Liberation of Sicyon) follows the 20-year-old refugee in his first military adventure, as he assembles a commando to liberate his home town from tyrant rule. Much more than a local event, Aratos' restoration of democracy in Sicyon is a key change for the political course of Greece, changing history for a century to come.
Regarding historic events, this chapter has not much to teach, but in literary terms it offers valuable insight into Aratos' narration techniques. Moreover it contains a genealogy of Aratus' family.
Chapter 2 (My Youth in Argos) investigates the influences of a young refugee in Hellenistic Argos, starting with his mythological and historical studies from the Trojan War to the Diadochs. Schooldays, every day adventures, the monuments of Argos, special encounters, developing friendships, new political events in the neigh-borhood all come in sight, until finally the teachings of a philosopher lead the young man to take a decision that will change his life.
On a scientific level the most interesting parts regard probably the philosophical influences of the future statesman, first of all the Academic Arkesilaos.
Präsentation des Romans "STRATEGOS"
Athen, 10. Januar 2018
This presentation introduces the plan of the historic novel "STRATEGOS" on the life and times of Aratos of Sikyon (272-213 BC), founder and leader of the Achaean League. The Hellenistic world with its polycentric international system, globalized science and trade with new challenges rising from the periphery, is seen as a "distant mirror" for our postmodern era. Some of the themes touched in this outlook are federalism, the menace from postdemocratic tyranny, democratic solidarity, Brexit, fake news and irony.
