Search should let you search for the title of a book in any language and give results across languages.
Open, LowPublic

Description

  1. go to the wikisource page of a certain language, for example English https://en.wikisource.org
  1. search for the exact title of something in a different language. For example: "Les Enfants du capitaine Grant" https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?search=Les+Enfants+du+capitaine+Grant
  1. See some results. You have to click the author's page, find the book in the list again and click on it.

This is a poor example because the word "Grant" appears in the text of the page for both English and French, so the book in English is the second result but I think you get my point. It should just send me to the English translation (or whichever language Wikisource I'm on) directly since I typed the exact match of a book title that appears on a different language Wikisource.

This could work by automatically creating redirects when articles are created or moved, or by changing the code of the search page.

It should also be like on Wikipedia where it'll show you "We found the following results from French Wikisource"

Note: this seems to be about a cross-wiki search, rather than a cross-language search on a multilingual wiki. The current search should already search content in all languages in the current wiki.

Is there a way to cross-link Wikisource pages across editions, similar to how Wikipedia links articles? Does that even make sense?

Is there a way to cross-link Wikisource pages across editions

There is more than one way. The traditional way is to have local interlanguage links https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Interlanguage_links (interwikis) but for a few years now we've had a mixed model with Wikidata/Wikibase and various core/template/gadget/extension trickeries. That's by itself a large discussion best continued elsewhere; T138332 and https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Books have some part of it.

Insofar this task is a request for a cross-wiki search to appear on Special:Search, engineering-wise this is probably easiest to provide in CirrusSearch with something like the "Results from sister projects" box enabled by $wgCirrusSearchEnableCrossProjectSearch that you can see e.g. on https://fr.wikibooks.org/?search=Dante . There are going to be limitations to that, for instance if the index for all Wikisources together is unwieldy.

A "proper" advanced search across all languages might one day be possible through Wikidata, or through something like Structured Commons, but we're far from having all the information available in a structured format.

Closing out low/est priority tasks over 6 months old with no activity within last 6 months in order to clean out the backlog of tickets we will not be addressing in the near term. Please feel free to reopen if you think a ticket is important, but bare in mind that given current priorities and resourcing, it is unlikely for the Search team to pick up these tasks for the indefinite future. We hope that the requested changes have either been addressed by or made irrelevant by work the team has done or is doing -- e.g. upgrading Elasticsearch to a newer version will solve various ES-related problems -- or will be subsumed by future work in a more generalized way.
