Reset admin password for travel@lists.wikimedia.org
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hi,

Ellie Young requested to be removed as an admin from travel@lists.wikimedia.org. Does this mailing list still exist? I know Byron worked on creating google groups to replace majority of the mailing lists. I also told her that that list is now a google group called travel@.

Best,
Jo

Krenair edited subscribers, added: Krenair; removed: Wikimedia-Mailing-lists.

It exists, she and Doreen are it's listed admins

Can you please remove Ellie. She does not want to be apart of this list anymore.

I can't. She probably can (assuming she has the administrative password) or if none of the existing people with the password can, operations people can be asked to do it.

Both Doreen and Ellie do not know the password. So Doreen isn't able to remove her from the list.

Aklapper renamed this task from Travel@lists.wikimedia.org to Reset admin password for travel@lists.wikimedia.org.Nov 4 2016, 10:45 AM

Hmm, I edited the task summary but now I'm wondering:
Is this maybe also a request to close the mailing list as it's not used anymore and a Google group is used instead? If not, I guess this has become a request to reset the admin password. :)
(Also note that unsubscribing from the mailing list is a separate action from being removed as an admin. Just pointing out for clarity.)

tomasz subscribed.

I believe Daniel and James can do that for you if you're really nice to them :-)

Hi,

here are some related tickets:

T122144 - move (almost) all mail aliases over to OIT (many done but not all that we wanted yet)

T127549 - move travel related aliases to OIT (unresolved, we tried but there were issues back then, not sure why)

T81161 - renamed travel-l to travel

T81702 - create travelmanager@

T81504 T81465 - create travel@

So in short, i don't think the Google group travel@ actually exists / is in use.

The password reset part of this:

https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mailman#Reset_the_admin_password_of_a_list

there is a "change_pw" script that any root can run on the server shell (no need for mailman master pass or web ui). I use it directly with pwgen to generate a random pass like this:

root@fermium:/var/lib/mailman/bin# ./change_pw -l travel -p $(pwgen -c1 -s 12)
New travel password:...

This will automatically send an email to the people listed as list owners. So you should have mail.

Then you can login with that on https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/travel

and change the admins as you like (direct link: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/admin/travel/?VARHELP=general/owner)

@bbogaert Not sure if we wanna try again to move travel@ to Google, given the issues we had on T127549 which is still open.

Dzahn claimed this task.
