Description
ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR WITH CONNECTOR POSITION ASSURANCE
ELEMENT
The present invention relates to an electrical connector, and in particular to an electrical connector of the type comprising a first and a second connector member, which can be coupled to each other, said first connector member being provided with a connector position assurance element .
The connector position assurance (also known as CPA) element is slidably mountable on the first connector member and has a first, preliminary mounting position on the first connector member in which the connector position assurance element can advance no further since it comes into engagement with a stop surface of the first connector member, if the second connector member is not yet coupled therewithin. The connector position assurance element further has a second, final position, which it can reach only after complete coupling of the two connector members, in which the connector position assurance element engages beyond a stop element of the second connector member.
Figure 1, relating to the prior art, illustrates a known type of connector. In particular, Figure la is a perspective view of the first connector member 1 without the connector position assurance element (also abbreviated below to CPA element), Figure lb is a perspective view of the first connector member with the CPA element 3 in the first, preliminary mounting position, i.e. with the CPA element pre-assembled, whereas Figures lc and Id are two
perspective views of the CPA element 3, from above and below respectively.
The sections illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 show some details of the connector member 1 and of the CPA element 3. In particular, Figure 2 without the CPA element 3 shows in greater detail the receiving portion present in the connector member 1, and its capacity to flex with respect to the rest of the body of the connector member 1.
In Figure 3 the CPA element 3 is in its preliminary mounting position and it is noted that the CPA element 3 can advance no further since its end portion 3a engages with a stop surface la of the receiving portion of the first connector member 1, as the second connector member 2 is not yet coupled within the first connector member 1.
Figure 4 indicates the direction D of coupling of the two connector members 1 and 2. Furthermore, Figure 4 shows the stop element 2a of the second connector member 2. This stop element 2a has a ramp with an inclined plane that facilitates the raising of the end portion 3a and the stop surface la of the first connector member 1, as can be seen in Figures 5 and 6. As the second connector member 2 advances within the first connector member 1 (see Figures 7 and 8), the stop element 2a glides and slides under the stop surface la of the first connector member 1 and under the end portion 3a of the CPA element.
Figures 9 and 10 show an intermediate phase in which the second connector member 2 is inserted into the first connector member 1, just before the CPA element 3 is released from engagement with the stop surface la.
In the next figures, 11 and 12, the connection between the two connector members is complete. The stop surface la has fallen down beyond the stop element 2a, while the end portion 3a of the CPA element 3 is raised and free to be taken into its second, final position (see the direction indicated by the arrow I in Figure 12) . In the final state illustrated in Figure 13, the end portion 3a of the CPA element 3 has been pushed beyond the stop element 2a of the second connector member 2. Figure 13 also shows that the CPA element cannot be returned to the preliminary state, since the mating surface 3b is engaged on the mating surface lb of the body of the first connector member 1. To release these portions, a tab on the body of the first connector member 1 must be pulled (in the direction of the arrow R) , allowing the surface lb to be lowered and the CPA element 3 to be released and returned to the intermediate, raised position, i.e. the position prior to the final position. The CPA element includes a gripping portion 3c, on which the operator acts to activate the CPA element and to bring it from the first, preliminary mounting position into the second, final position.
The object of the present invention is to produce an electrical connector of the above-mentioned type having a relatively simple and inexpensive structure.
A further object of the present invention is to produce an electrical connector that retains all the advantages of the known solution and allows said connector to be used with existing, currently used corresponding parts, with no need for modification.
According to the present invention, this object is achieved by an electrical connector having the above- mentioned characteristics and further characterised in that said connector position assurance element has at least a first engagement portion and at least a second engagement portion spaced from each other in a longitudinal direction of the connector position assurance element, which cooperate, respectively, one with said stop surface of said first connector member in said first, preliminary mounting position and the other with said stop element of said second connector member in said second, final position, in such a way that, when said first and said second connector member are coupled together correctly, it is possible to activate said connector position assurance element.
In a preferred embodiment the connector position assurance element comprises a body provided with a gripping portion and with a longitudinal arm portion extending from the gripping portion, and the aforesaid first and second engagement portions are made on the free end of the arm.
In particular, the end portion of the free end of the longitudinal arm of the position assurance element has on its lower surface a ramp-like portion that forms the second engagement portion.
Furthermore, the longitudinal arm of the position assurance element has, in a position set back from said ramp-like portion, two tabs that extend radially and form the first engagement portion.
Preferably, the longitudinal arm of the position assurance element further comprises two longitudinal guide ribs adapted to engage with two corresponding guide grooves
made in the first connector member, so as to facilitate the sliding of the position assurance element in the connector.
The first connector has a receiving portion connected flexibly to the main body of the first connector member, the receiving portion having a rear bridge portion suitable for receiving the connector position assurance element, a central portion formed by two longitudinal profiles which face each other, are spaced apart and on which the guide grooves are made, and a transverse front portion joining the free ends of the aforesaid longitudinal profiles and defining the aforesaid stop surface for the aforesaid tabs defining the first engagement portion of the connector position assurance element.
The transverse front portion has on its upper surface a protruding central element and two side teeth, the side teeth being in a position set back from the central element, wherein the side teeth form in the aforesaid first, preliminary mounting position the stop surface against which the aforesaid two tabs of the connector position assurance element abut, and the ramp-like portion forming the second engagement portion is located beyond said protruding central element.
Furthermore, again in the preferred embodiment, the second connector member has, in the central portion of its body, a first raised portion that during the insertion of the second connector member is capable of lifting the transverse front portion and the free end of the arm of the position assurance element, and a second raised portion positioned upstream of the first raised portion in the direction of insertion of the second connector member
within the first connector member, capable of keeping raised the free end of the arm of the position assurance element, while the transverse front portion is lowered and engaged between the two raised portions, thus freeing the tabs from the side teeth and allowing the connector position assurance element to be capable of being pushed from the first, preliminary mounting position to the second, final position, in which the ramp-like portion, which produces said second engagement portion of the assurance element, is advanced and abuts beyond said second raised portion, which defines the aforesaid stop element of the second connector member.
The body of the position assurance element further comprises a tooth protruding radially and in the opposite direction from the gripping portion. The first connector member comprises in the central part of its rear portion a step, and in the second, final position of the position assurance element the step engages with the tooth of the position assurance element in order to lock the position assurance element.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description with reference to the attached drawings, provided purely as a non-restrictive example, in which:
- Figures 1 to 13, related to the prior art, have already been described above,
- Figures 14 to 17 are perspective views of the two connector members in the uncoupled state,
- Figures 18a and 18b are perspective views showing the connector position assurance element according to the present invention,
- Figures 19a and 19b and 19c are perspective views showing the receiving portion of the first connector member according to the present invention,
- Figures 20 to 28 are sections showing successive phases of the coupling of the two connector members (and some figures give a direct comparison with the solution of the prior art, highlighting the differences) .
The following description illustrates various specific details aimed at a thorough understanding of the embodiments. The embodiments can be produced without one or more specific details, or with other methods, components, materials, etc. In other cases, known structures, structural details, materials or operations are not illustrated or described in detail, since they can be produced in any known manner and also since they do not, taken in isolation, come under the scope of the present invention .
Figures 14 and 15 are two perspective views, from different viewpoints, of the two connector members 10 and 20 in their fully coupled state, and with the CPA element 30 in the second, final position.
Figures 16 and 17 are two perspective views, from two different viewpoints, of the second connector member 20 according to the present invention. As can be seen in this case the second connector member 20 has two distinct elements 20a and 20b on the outer surface of its main body 20. These elements come into play at successive moments
during the coupling operations the two connector members 10 and 20.
With particular reference to Figures 18a and 18b, the connector position assurance element 30 has a first engagement portion formed by two tabs 30b and a second engagement portion formed by a ramp-like portion 30a. The two engagement portions 30a and 30b are spaced from each other in a longitudinal direction of the connector position assurance element 30 and cooperate respectively, one 30b with the stop surface of the first connector member 10 in the first, preliminary mounting position and the other 30a with the stop element 20 of the second connector member in the second, final position, such that when the first 10 and second 20 connector member are coupled together correctly it is possible to activate the connector position assurance element 30 and to bring it into the final position.
The connector position assurance element 30 comprises a body provided with a gripping portion 30d and with a longitudinal arm portion 30c extending from the gripping portion 30d. The aforesaid first 30b and second 30a engagement portions are made on the free end of said arm 30c.
The end portion of the free end of the longitudinal arm 30c of the position assurance element 30 has on its lower surface a ramp-like portion 30al that forms the second engagement portion 30a.
Furthermore, the longitudinal arm 30c of the position assurance element 30 has, in a position set back from the ramp-like portion 30al, two tabs 30b which extend radially and form the aforesaid first engagement portion.
The longitudinal arm 30c of the position assurance element 30 further comprises two longitudinal guide ribs 30e suitable for engaging with two corresponding guide grooves 16a made in the first connector member 10 (see Figure 19), so as to facilitate the sliding of the position assurance element 30 in the connector 10.
The first connector member 10 has a receiving portion 10a (see Figure 19a, 19b, 19c and 20) connected flexibly by means of two arms 12 to the main body 10 of the first connector member. The receiving portion 10a is connected to the body 10 via the ends 12a, which act as hinges and allow the whole receiving portion 10a to flex around these connection points.
The receiving portion 10a has a rear bridge portion 14 suitable for receiving the connector position assurance element 30, a central portion formed by two longitudinal profiles 16 which face each other, are spaced apart and on which the aforesaid guide grooves 16a are made, and a transverse front portion 18 joining the free ends of the aforesaid longitudinal profiles 16. The front portion 18 performs the function of the aforesaid stop surface la introduced in the description of the known art, against which the two aforesaid tabs 30b are engaged, which define the first engagement portion of the connector position assurance element 30.
In greater detail, the transverse front portion 18 has on its upper surface a protruding central element 18a and two side teeth 18b, and the side teeth 18b are located in a position set back from the central element 18a, wherein, in the aforesaid first, preliminary mounting position of the
position assurance element 30, the side teeth 18b perform the function of the stop surface (indicated in the known art by the element la in Figure 20a) , against which the aforesaid two tabs 30b of the element 30 abut. Again in the first, preliminary mounting position (see Figure 20b), the ramp-like portion 30al, which forms the second engagement portion of the element 30, is located beyond the central element 18a. As can be seen by comparing the two figures, 20a (prior art) and 20b (novel solution), both relating to the first, preliminary mounting position of the element 30, in the first case referring to the prior art the engagement portion 3a of the element 30 is in contact with the stop surface la of the connector 1, and can move no further, whereas in the second case referring to the invention the second engagement portion 30al is located beyond the central element 18a, because the locking function to prevent the CPA element 30 from moving beyond its preliminary mounting position is no longer performed by this second engagement portion 30al, but rather by the first engagement portion formed by the two tabs 30b, which, as is more clearly illustrated in Figure 21, are engaged against the side teeth 18b of the transverse front portion 18 of the receiving portion 10a of the first connector member 10.
Figure 21a thus shows the first connector member with the CPA element 30 in the preliminary mounting position, and Figure 21b is an enlargement of the previous figure, showing that the CPA element 30 can advance no further, i.e. it cannot move beyond the stop surface defined by the side teeth 18b.
Figures 23, 24 and 25 show in sequence various phases of coupling the two connector members 10 and 20.
In the central portion of its body 20 the second connector member has a first raised portion 20a, which during insertion of the second connector member 20 is capable of raising the transverse front portion 18 and the free end 30al of the arm 30c of the position assurance element 30. The second connector member also has a second raised portion 20b positioned upstream of the first raised portion 20a in the direction of insertion D of the second connector member 20 within the first connector member 10, capable of keeping raised the free end 30al of the arm 30c of the position assurance element 30 while the transverse front portion 18 is lowered (see Figure 25) and engaged between the two raised portions 20a and 20b, thus freeing the tabs 30b from the side teeth 18b and allowing the connector position assurance element 30 to be capable of being pushed from the first, preliminary mounting position to the second, final position illustrated in Figures 27 and 28.
Figure 26 shows the state of complete coupling of the two connector members 10 and 20, with the CPA element 30 in an intermediate position, ready to be pushed into the final position. As can be observed by comparing Figures 22 to 26, the front edge 20c of the second connector member 20 is advanced in the direction of insertion D until it comes into abutment against an abutment wall 10c of the first connector member 10.
Figure 27 shows the CPA element 30 in the final position, in which the ramp-like portion 30al, forming the
second engagement portion of the assurance element 30, has been advanced and abuts beyond the second raised portion 20a defining the aforesaid stop element of the second connector member 20.
Finally, the body 30 of the position assurance element comprises a tooth 30f protruding radially and in the opposite direction from the gripping portion 30d. The first connector member 10 comprises in the central part of its rear portion a step 10c (which also defines the aforesaid abutment wall for the front edge 20c of the second connector member 20), wherein, in the second, final position of the position assurance element 30, the step 10c engages with the tooth 30f in order to lock the position assurance element 30 in position.
Again with reference to Figure 28, in the second, final position of the position assurance element 30 the side tabs 30b are housed in dedicated areas made on the transverse portion 18, i.e. they are located beyond the side teeth 18b.
Naturally, without prejudice to the principle of the invention, the construction details and the embodiments can vary widely from those described and illustrated purely by way of example, without thereby departing from the scope of the present invention.
