UNITED STATES HENRY J. DIOKERSON, OF APPLE'ION, WISCONSIN.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,045, dated March 30, 1880.
Application tiled July 9, 1879.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. DrcKERsoN, of Appleton, in the county of Outagamie and State of Visconsin, have invented certain newV and useful Improvements in Combined Shutter and Blind-Slat Operators; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l. is a bottom view of the cap C. Fig. is a plan view of the blind-slat-operating device. Fig. 3 is the shaft and chain and their connection. Fig. 4 is a modified form of the locking device employed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the window-casing, show ing interior of cap C. Fig. 6 is a plan view of hinge B. Fig. 7 is an elevation of the casing and blind.; and Figs. 8 and 9 show the preferred forni of locking mechanism.
Like letters represent the same parts.
The window-casing is represented by a, the blind by I), the blindslats by c, and the rod connecting such slats by d. These parts may be of any convenient construction. rIhe upper hinge, which connects the casing to the blind, may be of ordinary construction. The lower hinge is composed of two parts, A B, the part A being attached to the casing and the part B to the blind. The portion A is made in two parts, C D, placed together and screwed to the window-frame. rlhe upper portion consists of an outwardly-projecti ng hollow cap, and a projection from the part B,having a central opening, partly lls the said cap, leaving sufficient space, however, for the easy play therein ofthe chain X, which is composed of fiat links riveted together, as shown in Fig. 3. The projection D has a spindle, Awhich passes through the central opening in the cap Gand forms a bearing-surface for the movable hinge B to turn on. The end of the chain is formed with a round link or ring, which is placed over the projecting stud on the movable plate B.
It is evident that the movement of the chain will cause an axial movement of the hinge B on the spindle and will swing the blind.
A square mortise is eut entirely through the casing of the window, and in such mortise is placed the square shaft H, one end of the shaft being connected to the chain X and the l other passing through to the interior of t-he house, where itis provided with a suitable knob. The shaft may thus be pushed in and out, and the blind is operated by such movement.
It is desirable in devices of this class that means be provided for not only locking the blind when open or closed, but for adjusting its position when partly open. The means of adjustment employed by me consist of acam, O, through which the shaft- H passes, as shown in Fig. l2, which is provided with an elliptical slot, in which works an eccentric, P, operated by a thumb-lever. A motion of the eccentric in either direction will move the cam and hence rotate the shaft slightly. The frietional contact of the cam with the square shaft is sufficient to hold it against motion, and the locking device may be applied in any position of the blind.
A modified form of vthis locking device is shown in Fig. 4, differing from that already described only in the form of cam and eccentric. In cases where greater strength is required in the locking device I may employ a double friction-cam, the two pawls of which act simultaneously; but usually the single cam described will be sufficient for all ordinary purposes.
rJhe blind-slat operator is shown in Fig. 2. It consists of a forked lever, K, attached at one end in any suitable manner to the slat-rod cl. lt is pivoted to the forked plate t' on the blind,
' and when such blind is closed passes through Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a shutterworker, the combination, with the square shaft H, of the cam and eccentric for locking such shaft, substantially as described and shown.
2. In a shutter-worker and blind-Slat opera- IOO tor, the combination of the forked lever K, the shaft H, and the cam 4and eccentric, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a shutter-Worker, a locking device 5 consisting of a cam through which the operating rod or shaft passes, in combination with a pivoted eccentric, whereby said shaft is locked by frictional contact with said cam, as set forth.
1o 4. In a shutter-worker, the described hinge joint, consisting of the two-part plate A, fixed to the Window-casing and having the upper projecting cap, C, lower projecting plate and spindle, and the plate B on the blind, having a 15 projecting plate provided with a central opening through which said spindle passes, all substantially as described and shown.
5. The described hinge-joint, in combination with the chain and square shaft, as and for the purposes set forth. 2o
6. The shutter-Worker and blind-Slat opera' tor described, consisting of the hinge-joint A B, chain X, shaft H, cam O, eccentric P, and forked lever K, all constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
