My invention relates to typewriters, and, in particular, to the mechanism for adjusting and determining the spacing between lines on the typewriter. Y
It'is the object of my invention to provide single spacing, a space and a half spacing, and double spacing.
It is an additional object to provide such spacing and attendant mechanism that the platen may be moved uniformly the exact cording to my invention, to move both ratchets a total of three teeth for double spacing, or one tooth on the outside ratchet for single spacing, or two teeth on both ratchets for space and a half spacing.
It is a further object to provide means of holding the platen for the particular spacing desired, or placing said holding meansinto a neutral'position, as the operator may desire, in order to secure the adjustment of ratchets. i

' i 1 is a frame which consists primarily of an end plate having an aperture 2 for the' reception of the shaft 3, which supports the platen4. Mounted upon this platen shaft on the end thereof are two ratchets. The inner ratchet is designated 5, and is. known as the space and a half ratchet. It has eighteen teeth. The outer ratchet, designated 6, has twenty-seven teeth, and is used for'the single and double spacing. Between these ratchets,
mounted on a hub on the axle of the platen is a lever 7, which is known as the platen ratchet release lever. This level" 7 is provided with a thumb piece 8 and an eye 9, which eye fits upon the hub carried on the platen. A cam 10 is associated with this lever between the stops 11 and'12. This cam is so arranged that it will engage with the roller 13, which serves to hold the single and double spacing ratchet 6 in position, and also with the roller 14, which serves to 'hold the one and a half spacin ratchet in position. It is adapted to move these rollers out of engagement with their respective ratchets in succession, and also is adapted to move both of them out of engagement with either ratchet when the lever is in neutral position. These rollers are carried in y- okes 15 and 16 respectively. The yokes in turn are supported upon a V-shaped spring bracket 17, which holds the rollers yieldingly againstthe ratchets. It will be observed that as the platen ratchet release lever is rotated about its hub, the engagement of the respective cams will actuate the respective rollers, while the stops 11 and 12'will limit the movement of thelever and its cams as they respectively engage the rollers 13 and 14.
The platen release lever in the position A presses down the roller 14. In position B the lever is in neutral, then both rollers are out of engagement with both ratchets, and
v in position C the roller 14 is in engagement with its ratchet.
Thus it will be seen that, by reason of the engagement of the proper roller with the properratchet, any overrun of the ratchet and the accompanying platen will be prevented, and the platen will be moved the predetermined spaces desired, and no more, when it is suitably actuated by the mechanism to be hereinafter described.
The frame 1 has an outwardly extending ledge or platform 18, upon which there is mounted the spacing lever 19, which has a finger piece 20. This handle is pivotally mounted on the bracket 18 on a stud 21. Around the stud is wrapped a helical spring 22, one end of which is anchored on a pin 23, carried by the bracket, and the other end of which, as at 24, engages with a notch 25 in the side of the lever 19, thus serving always to return the lever to its initial actuating position. A projecting arm and eye on the end thereof, designated 26, is formed, integral with the spacing lever 19. Pivoted thereto and connected in said eye by a bolt 27, is an actuating arm 28, which extends rearwardly to a point adjacent to and above the platen, where it engages in an eye 29 with anupwardly projecting arm 30, which is formed integral with the two pawls 31 and 32, which are joined together by the member 33.
Thus by a movement of the spacing lever, the pawls may be'reciprocated back and forth. Pivotally supporting these pawls is the platen spacingpawl arm 34. The upper end of'this arm is provided with an eye 35,
through which a pin 36 is inserted for pivotal engagement with the pawls. This platen spacing-pawl arm has an enlarged collar 37 for mounting upon a hub of the platen. Connected to'this collar is a projecting stop 38,which engages with a stud 39, which limitsfitsmovement in a backward direction,
due to the influence of a spring 40, one end of which is connected at 41 to the platen spacing pawl arm, and the other end of which is anchored, as at 42, to the face of the side plate 1. The teeth 43 and 44 of the pawls 31 and 32 respectively engage with the teeth 45 and 46 of the respective ratchets 5 and 6. V
It will be noted that the teeth on these respective ratchets coincide or are opposite to each other at every fourth tooth of ratchet 6 and at every third tooth of ratchet 5;
In order to determine to what extent the pawls may throw the ratchet, and therefore the platem'an adjust-able cam stop'is provided, for engagement with the platen spao ingpawl arm 34. A. notch 47 is provided, in one edge of the platen spacing pawl arm 34, for the reception of this cam, which is designated 48. The cam is mounted upona stud 49, iournaled in the frame 1, and actuatedby a knurled head 50, so that the cam may be rotated. To maintain the cam in any desired position, a setting cam 51 is provided, fixed thereto, having a pluralityof notches 52 with which a bent spring 53 successively engages, to-lock the cam in position, this spring being carried upon a stud 54 on the frame 1.
The cam itself is'provided with acam surface 55, 56, and 57. lVhen .55 engages with the notch 47, an actuation of the'lever 19 will move the platen two spaces. I If the cam engages the notch 47, then the actuation will be only one space; while if the cam 57 engages with the notch 47, the actuation will extend to a space anda half.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is: v

'In a spacing mechanism for a typewriter, a frame mounted on a carriage,a platenjournaled in said frame, a pair of ratchets mounted O11 'S2Ll(l platen at one end thereof, having an unequal number of teeth, given teeth on each of said ratchets being opposite each other at certain spaced intervals, a platform on said frame, a horizontally moving lever thereon, limiting means to keep said lever in its initial position, an act-uating lever connected therewith for reciprocatory movement, a pair of pawls adapted to be actuated thereby and adapted to engage said ratchets, a platen spacing pawl arm supporting said pawls pivotally, said arm being journaled on the shaft of said platen, and cam means adapted to engage said arm to limit the movement thereof, to determine the extent of throw by said pawls of said ratchets and platen. 1
2. In a spacing mechanism for a typewriter, a frame mounted on a carriage, a platen journaled in said frame, a pair of ratchets mounted on said platen at one end thereof, having an unequal number of teeth, given teeth on each of said ratchets being opposite each other at certain spaced intervals, a platform on said frame, a horizontally moving lever thereon, limiting means to keep said lever in its initial position, an actuating lever connected therewith for reciproeatery movement, a pair of pawls adapted to be actuated thereby and adapted to engage said ratchets, a platen spacing pawl arm supporting said pawls pivotally, said arm being journaled on the shaft of said platen, cam means adapted to engage said arm to limit the movementthereof, to determine the extent of throw by said pawls of said ratchets and platen, and means to maintain said cam means in a predetermined position.
