IMPROVEMENT IN AUGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,090, dated December 22, 1874; application filed May 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. KING, of Covington, Tioga county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new Improvement in Angers, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved anger with detachable cutter, and Fig. 2 a bottom view of the same; Fig. 3, a top view of the cutterhead detached, and Figs. 4 and 5 side and bottom views of anger with detachable cutter taken off.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved auger with detachable cutter-head, for being readily replaced when injured without requiring a new auger, and allowing the use of the auger with cutters of various sizes.
My invention consists of an auger with detachable cutter-head placed over the screwpoint, and connected by grooves with dove- Tailed side recesses, fastening the screws to the lips of the auger.
A in the drawing represents an auger made in one piece with the screw-points A thereof.
The detachable cutter B is provided with a central perforation to he slipped over the screw, and with twisted and tapering blades fitting exactly the shape of the lips of the auger-shank. The upper part of the cutter B has a central groove, (1, with dovetailed recesses a at diametrically-opposite sides, for engaging the edges of the auger-lips. Each blade of the cutter B has one or more perforations, b, which correspond with connecting: holes of the auger, for riveting or screwing the cutter-head firmly thereon.
The cutter may be readily applied and detached, saving thereby the expense for a new auger when any part of the cutter-blades gets injured, and allow, also, the attachment of larger sizes for boring larger holes, if required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An auger having a detachable cutter-head connected thereto by dovetail recesses and screws, as shown and described.
