- This invention has relation to dredge-cans for containing spices and other pulverized substances, both for transportation and for domestic use. It consists in a dredge-can cover having an opening through it, in combination with a circularly-slidin g plate, which is adapted for closing said opening, and which is finely perforated for dredging purposes, said parts being constructed with teats or elevations and depressions, so arranged that they serve to hold the sliding plate in proper position when adjusted, and also serve as registers for readily determining such positions, as will be hereinafter explained.

-IMPROVEMENT IN DREDGE-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14 8,472, dated March 10, 1874; application filed November 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, HENRY O. LOOKWOOD, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Dredge-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of my dredge-can. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a top view of same.
This invention has relation to dredge-cans for containing spices and other pulverized substances, both for transportation and for domestic use. It consists in a dredge-can cover having an opening through it, in combination with a circularly-slidin g plate, which is adapted for closing said opening, and which is finely perforated for dredging purposes, said parts being constructed with teats or elevations and depressions, so arranged that they serve to hold the sliding plate in proper position when adjusted, and also serve as registers for readily determining such positions, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description of my improvement:
In the annexed drawings, A represents the body of the dredge-can, which is cylindrical, and provided with a cover, B, having a convex top. This cover B has a heart-shaped hole, B, through it on one side of its center; and it also has a teat, 6, located as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which may be formed by striking up the metal with a round pointed tool. 0 designates a circularly-movable plate, which is centrally pivoted to the cover B by means of a rivet and washer, a, and which is shaped so as to fit closely upon the convex head of this cover. The plate 0 is somewhat less than a full circle, so that when it is turned to the position indicated in Fig. 3 it will expose the opening B through the cover B, and when it is turned one-quarter around from such position it will completely close said opening.
This adjustable plate 0 is perforated at c, the perforations covering an area equal to that of the opening B; and when these perforations are adjusted over said opening, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device can be used for dredging purposes.
It will be observed that it is required to adjust the plate Gin three positions with respect to the opening B, in all of which positions it is important to have this plate (J firmly held. To this end I construct the plate with three concavities, e e e, which are produced in the same manner as the teat e on cover B, and which present their concave sides to this teat when adjusted over it. One of the concavities e is arranged in such relation to the perforations c that when they are adjusted over the opening B such concavity will spring over the teat e and holdthe plate 0. The other two concavities e e are so arranged that when either one of them is adjusted over the teat c the hole B will be closed by the imperforated portion of the plate 0.
It will be seen that the teat e not only holds the plate 0 when it is adjusted in a proper position, but this teat, together with the depressions or concavities 6, serves to indicate at once when the said plate 0 is properly adjusted in any one of the three positions above named.
I do not claim, broadly, a dredge can or box having a perforated head or cover and a circularly-adjustable plate pivoted thereto.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The holding projection e on perforated cover B, in combination with concavities e in the circularly-adjustable and perforated plate or cap 0 of a dredge-can, constructed substantially as described.
