Abstract
677,784. Reducing surface reflection. KOCH, J. July 13, 1949 [July 20, 1948], No. 18530/49. Class 97 (i). Surface reflection of optical elements formed for example of glass or quartz is reduced by irradiating the surface with one or more beams of energetic ions of argon, krypton or xenon, of which some at least penetrate the surface of the element. The inert gas may be ionized in an electric arc-discharge, purified by a magnetic field and directed on to the surface by an electric lens system. Such action modifies the surface to reduce reflection. The invention may be applied to reduce reflection from the glass screen of a cathode-ray tube and of contact spectacle lenses.
