Abstract
Synthetic linear polyamide filaments which contain a compatible phenol-formaldehyde resin are subjected to the action of a hot aqueous alkali solution while held at fixed length. The extraction of the resin by paint and lacquer solvents is thereby reduced and the bend-recovery of the filaments improved. The preferred phenolic resins are those of low molecular weight which do not become infusible on heating for short periods at 275 DEG to 285 DEG C. and which are obtained by the acid condensation of formaldehyde and unsubstituted phenol in molecular ratio of from 0.5 to 1.0. Ortho- and para-substituted phenols may be used, and in general the ratio of formaldehyde to phenol must be decreased with increase in molecular weight of phenols in order to maintain compatability with the polyamides. For example, there may be used a resin prepared from formaldehyde and p-tertiary-butyl phenol in molecular ratio of 0.75, or a resin prepared from formaldehyde and p-octyl phenol in molecular ratio of 0.5. Other suitable substituted phenols are cresol, amyl phenol and phenyl phenol. Suitable aqueous alkali solutions are solutions of hydroxides of sodium, barium, potassium and lithium, and salts of weak acids such as sodium carbonate and sodium acetate. In an example, a drawn filament containing 20 parts of phenol-formaldehyde resin (prepared by condensing 900 parts of phenol with 580 parts of 37 per cent formaldehyde solution in the presence of 9 parts of ammonium chloride and 10 parts of oxalic acid) and 80 parts of polyhexamethylene adipamide is wrapped around a reel and exposed to boiling water for an hour. It is then immersed in a boiling solution of 5 per cent sodium hydroxide for one hour. Specifications 461,236, 461,237 and 27108/39 (as open to inspection under Sect. 91) are referred to.
