Abstract
Compositions having low specific gravity and low thermal conductivity are formed by treating magnesium or aluminium silicates such as asbestos and mica either alone or in combination as an artificial or natural mixture, with dilute hydrofluoric acid so that the asbestos &c. becomes coated with metallic fluoride which serves as a binding agent. Hydrofluosilicic acid may also be used. Excess of acid is used to ensure rapid action on the silicates, neutralization of caustic alkali and conversion of starch into gum. Remaining traces of acid may be neutralized by magnesium carbonate. The wet material may be cast and heated to remove excess of moisture, or mixed with an adhesive comprising caustic alkali and starch, gums or vegetable jelly so that it may be used as lagging around steam pipes which evaporate the moisture, or may be mixed with powdered or granulated cork to form fireproof material, flooring tiles or insulating material for cold storage chambers. In making bricks &c. for furnace linings &c. moderate heating to remove moisture may be followed by heating to 1200 DEG C.
