Abstract
1471703 Melting samples ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 11 Oct 1974 [17 Oct 1973] 44181/74 Heading F4B An apparatus for preparing a homogeneous fused sample comprises a holder for the material to be fused, means for heating the material, means for tilting and means for rotating the material holder, means for cooling the fused sample, and means for controlling the heat supply so that the material is heated to below its fusion temperature for a predetermined period, then heated to its fusion temperature for a further predetermined period and cooled. A crucible 40 is mounted above a burner 20, on a platform 10 mounted on a control housing 4 so that it can tilt about trunnions 12. The crucible 40 and burner 20 can rotate together. The housing accommodates a pneumatic cylinder to move the platform 10, a drive for rotating the crucible and burner, and timers and other controls (Figs. 5 and 6) arranged so that the burner is fed with a set quantity of gas and air to heat a sample in the crucible for a set time, then by-pass valves are opened to increase the gas and air supply to melt the sample the crucible and burner being tilted and rotated so as to ensure thorough mixing. At the end of the cycle, the gas valves are closed and the air valves opened to cool the sample by air blown from the burner.
