Professor and Head of Programme of Communication Design at Otago Polytechnic - Te Pūkenga, in Otepoti Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand. My research uses creative, social, and digital practices to reconsider our place in the world. Embracing sustainable and decolonial agendas, my work places emphasis on social relationships, interdependency and care, to suggest empathic and alternative ways of knowing and being with our urban, suburban and natural environments. Embracing multiple forms: collaborative creative practice, reflective and critical writing, and education-based engagement I welcome your feedback.

Times have never been bleaker for our graduating communication designers. Unofficial attempts at monitoring graduate employment outcomes lead us to believe that over the past 12 years most of our graduates (over 80 percent) have found design-related work within 18 months of graduation. More formal surveys produced by Otago Polytechnic support these figures. However, in 2020 we acknowledged that the Covid-19 pandemic had reduced opportunities for travel, and had created an employment-averse industry.

Making things has always involved skill and thought. Thought is given to their creation so they are fit for purpose. Where the purpose is aesthetic or intellectual pleasure, the resulting object is often called art. There is, however, often a hierarchy placing “art” somewhere apart from “design.” But isn’t some art designed? We will take this reflection to consider the questions:
HOW can local initiatives be shared across institutions and countries, and involve learners, teachers and local communities as collaborators in a networked learning conversation?
WHO benefits, and how do we evaluate and share these benefits?
In small groups workshop participants will share a learning activity to create an outcome, and present this to their peers. We will compare the strategies and processes employed by each group and their end results. We will then use these to reflect upon our different approaches to learning and recognizing capabilities. As a larger group we will consider the impact on learner outcomes and the learner experience through taking different approaches.
How might our reflections inform our future conversations about pedagogy, learning and capabilities?
