The second time’s a charm for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.”
The dark fantasy comedy-horror, which The Post called “pointless” and “belabored,” earned $41.5 million on Friday, its first day in theaters, according to The Numbers.
The Tim Burton film, which serves as a sequel to the 1988 cult classic “Beetlejuice,” is expected to take in at least $97 million domestically on its opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If that’s the case, the film will enjoy the second-biggest September opening of all time, trailing only behind 2017’s supernatural horror “It.”
Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprised their roles in the sequel — which had a staggering reported production budget of $100 million — and Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe joined the cast.
“Deadpool & Wolverine,” which was in the No. 1 spot for the past five Fridays, fell to second, with sales of $1.7 million. The Marvel superhero flick is projected to take in $6.7 million this weekend, its sixth in theaters, as per Deadline.
The presidential biopic “Reagan,” which The Post said, “covers all the greatest hits of the Republican’s life and career, with no famous line or episode left out,” came in third, bringing home just over $1.5 million on its second Friday in theaters.
“It Ends With Us” remained in fourth, taking in $1.1 million in revenue.
The romantic drama generated a buzz because of an alleged feud between its stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, and this week, their co-star, Brandon Sklenar, spoke out about his Aug. 20 Instagram post addressing the controversy.
“I put that out and I was like, see how this goes, I don’t know. It just seems silly to me,” he told Access.
“It’s kinda defeating the whole purpose of the thing to spread any negativity. It’s an important film for so many women and for so many survivors of domestic abuse. And yeah, that’s what it’s all about, is making people feel heard and strong and loved. So to project anything but that seems counterintuitive. And I appreciate those people that appreciated it.”
“Alien: Romulus,” which was in third place last week, flew down to fifth, with $1 million in revenue.
