Anti-Israel vandals strike again and more: Letters to the Editor — Aug. 11, 2024

Homegrown terror

Regarding the cowardly anti-Israel vandalism of a Columbia University executive’s apartment, the writer Cathy Wilkerson offers an apt description (“Anti-Israel vandals release crickets, splash red paint over Columbia exec’s NYC apartment building,” Aug. 9).

In reviewing a book on the Weather Underground domestic terrorist group, Wilkerson, who was a former member, described the movement as a “cynical, superficial romp” through the turbulent period of the 1960s, aimed at changing “our country’s unjust and inequitable institutions.”

Instead of opting for peaceful protest, student protesters today are, unfortunately, taking their cues from the bomb-makers and -throwers.

Storm brewin’

While only a mere Category 1 hurricane when she slammed ashore along Florida’s southwest coast, Hurricane Debby really packed a wallop (“Debby to produce ‘historic’ rainfall,” Aug. 7).

With sustained winds averaging 70 miles per hour and torrential flooding rains and storm surges as high as 4 to 6 feet above sea level, the storm downed hundreds of trees and power lines, knocking out power to over half a million Floridians.

The storm also tragically caused the deaths of five individuals in Florida, and one in Georgia, as it roared ashore.

Now, with the threat of record breaking rainfall in the Southeast, Debby is going to be one for the weather record books.

This is only the beginning of what promises to be a very active and dangerous Atlantic hurricane season, which will certainly begin to ramp up during August and September.

The entire Eastern Seaboard, as well as the Gulf Coast, needs to be ready for these invaders from the tropics.

Elephant love

I am writing to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your recent coverage of the elephant at the Bronx Zoo, who has been out of the public view for several weeks (“Happy daze at Bx. Zoo,” Aug. 7).

The Post’s attention to this story has not only brought relief to many concerned patrons but also highlighted the importance of wildlife conservation and animal welfare.

As an avid supporter of wildlife and conservation efforts, thank you for keeping the public informed about the well-being of the Bronx Zoo’s cherished elephant.

Mad mask ban

The Nassau County No Mask Law must be nullified and overturned by the state judicial system (“A ‘Mask’demeanor,” Aug. 7).

Innocent people, peaceful protesters who are wearing masks, who have asthma, diabetes or cancer could be fined $1,000 or put in prison for one year under this unjust law.

This law discriminates against peaceful protesters who wear masks, possibly to prevent getting COVID-19, which still poses a risk to many.

Putin’s problems

Vladimir Putin realizes the outbreak of an expanded war in the Middle East would result in attacks on the military structure of Iran (“Vlad’s Iran warning,” Aug. 8)

This would disrupt the weapons he is receiving from Iran, which would impact his ability to attack Ukraine.

“Vlad” is no peacemaker — just a geopolitical realist.

War in the Middle East will impact Ukraine to the detriment of Russia.
