State Senate candidate Slawomir Platta is trying to launch the “No Homeless Shelter Party” to protest homeless shelters the de Blasio administration plans for Queens neighborhoods.
“I oppose the de Blasio style of homeless shelters being introduced in this community,” said Platta, a lawyer eyeing Democratic state Sen. Joseph Addabbo’s southwestern Queens seat, noting the shelter placements have locals “afraid.”
In June, the city announced plans to open a 113-bed shelter for mentally ill homeless men at a church on 101st Avenue and 86th Street in Ozone Park by the end of the year.
They want to build a second shelter in the area in the coming years.
Platta said Thursday he collected about 2,000 of 3,000 signatures necessary to create the “No Homeless Shelter” ballot line by Tuesday’s deadline to file independent nominating petitions – following in the footsteps of other one-issue groups like the Rent Is Too Damn High Party. He’s also running in the Sept. 13 Republican primary for the 15th senate district.
