Out-of-control car rips through NYC supermarket

A speeding SUV plowed into a Queens supermarket Tuesday, hitting a clerk and four others before coming to a stop after slamming into a giant display of apples.

The elderly driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending her Mercedes SUV through the glass and brick facade of the Pathmark on Farrington Street in Flushing, police said. The five victims were seriously injured.

“It was crazy,” said Derica Doward, who had finished her grocery shopping when the Mercedes sped past her at about 6 p.m.

“She flew inside and the two guys standing right in front got really hurt.”

Mark Rengifo, an employee at the deli counter, said, “She took out the self-checkout machines, destroyed display dividers and ran through pipes.

“One of the self-checkout guys got nailed,” he added. “He got really badly mangled. He had a giant gash on his head down to the bone.”

Cops did not identify the 72-year-old woman who was behind the wheel, but said that she “accidentally” hit the gas. No charges have been filed.
