Former NYPD cop gunned down in Florida

A Florida cop who once worked for the NYPD was shot and killed in the line duty early Sunday, officials said.

Charles Kondek was a 17-year veteran of the Tarpon Springs Police Department who previously had a five-year stint with the NYPD, authorities said.

He was last on the job in New York was out of the 75th Precinct in East York, Brooklyn, NYPD sources said.

The father of five Kondek was shot at about 3 a.m. about 30 miles east of Tampa while responding to complaints about a suspect knocking on doors at the Villa Plumosa condos at 199 Grand Blvd., authorities said.

The suspect drove away in a white Hyundai Elantra, before crashing into a pole and another car before he was busted, officials told WLFA-TV.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the Kondek Family and offer our deepest sympathy to them,” the Tarpon Springs Police Department said in a statement. “May Charlie rest in peace and We Will Never Forget him.”

Kondek was the first Tarpon Springs officer to die in the line of duty since 1969.
