Worst of council no-shows

It’s a good thing attendance doesn’t count at the City Council.

Five council members — who earn base salaries of $112,500 plus bonuses — missed at least 16 percent of their required meetings at City Hall during fiscal year 2011, records show.

One of the worst offenders was Larry Seabrook (D-Bronx), who was charged last year in a 13-count indictment with money laundering, extortion and fraud and is awaiting trial.

Seabrook missed 27.7 percent of the full council and committee meetings, including seven of 12 sessions of the Committee on Civil Rights — an issue he claims to champion.

In February, The Post reported Seabrook had not introduced a single piece of legislation in 2010. He has kept that record intact so far this year. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

The worst attendance record belongs to Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn), who was absent 28 percent of the time.

Barron had a simple reason for missing so many meetings: He said the fates of most bills are pre-determined, rendering meetings a waste of time.

Rounding out the top five absentees are Jim Gennaro (D-Queens), who missed 19.4 percent of his meetings while dealing with a family medical issue, and Julissa Ferreras (D-Queens) and Sara Gonzalez (D-Brooklyn), who were both absent 18 percent of the time.

Ferreras and Gonzalez could not immediately be reached for comment.
