Crews battle brush fire at Kennedy Space Center

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — A brush fire broke out Wednesday at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the site of the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour later this week.

NASA officials said the fire is not considered to be a threat to Endeavour’s countdown.

The fire began in the swampy area next to the launch complex, about three miles (4.8 kilometers) from the space shuttle launch pad.

Heavy smoke was seen in the area as fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

Earlier Wednesday, NASA managers cleared Endeavour for launch at 3:47pm local time Friday.
