GM’s comeback

In his April 18 op-ed, Mark Modica selectively picks numbers without context to downplay the positive trajectory of the new General Motors and ignores strong momentum fueled by GM’s surging product lineup (” ‘Government Motors’ is Still a Lemon,” PostOpinion).

In the first quarter of 2011, GM’s US retail sales increased 38 percent. If Modica looked beyond one month’s incentives, he’d see we gained market share in 2010 with incentives below our domestic competitors.

GM took important steps to prepare for rising gas prices. Chevrolet Cruze is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered vehicle in the United States, and more than 50,000 have been sold this year.

The Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle is Motor Trend Car of the Year. Chevrolet is selling every Volt it makes while ramping up for more markets later this year.

Modica is wrong on China. Today’s auto marketplace is global, and GM’s leadership in China and other emerging markets sets us apart.

An even-handed examination of the facts shows GM is making real progress toward once again becoming a company America can be proud of.
